Oh yeah Brilliant boxer one of my faves, but 6 figures sums in the 70's was a fantastic amount so it wasn't like he was shortchanged. Boxers are lucky to make 100k in 2009 nevermind 1971
It was the mid 70's not the early 1900's of course he had an agent. Norman Hunter... one of the most well known Footballers of the 70's has run a pub in Beeston (Leeds) since he retired and does after dinner speaking, like most sportstars of that time.... or they have just got a job, I know of premiership players to have got a day job after football If he really needed money he could get a job in B&Q or get on the after dinner circuit, all he wants is an easy buck. If I retired and pissed away my pension, I wouldn't expect my former emlployer for and workmates for a whip around
I say why not, as long as the fight can be competitive. If he's fighting a complete novice whose greener than a gourd, or almost as old as himself, there's no issue. IMO, its not unusual. Remember Johnny Waldron? Hadn't fought since the 1970's as a professional, and been active on the unlicensed scene for many years against guys like Shaw and McLean. Then he makes a return at the age of 40, fights Julius Francis, and knocks Francis out in the 1st round. Incredible stuff. I say, let the old **** have his time in the sun again, whose it gonna hurt but him?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/8045511.stm Buchanan admits a comeback could be fraught with danger. "I've got a broken back and shouldn't even be in a gym because I'm on pain killers for the rest of my life," he said. "The only way you can make that money is to make a comeback. I can't work, I could never get employed anywhere. "I know it's stupid but it will work out OK. I'm in good nick, it's difficult to give it up." atschatschatschatschatsch
