Ken won't be coming back, thankfully, he probably had just one too many shandees.... or just fancied a few quid for a news story...
Every now and then the underworld surprises you. Remember Waldron-Francis? Waldron knocked Julius out in the 1st round, and he was in his 40's and his best years in the unlicensed ring was back in the late 1970's. Not long after that Francis became the "undisputed" champion of Britain.
Saul Mamby lost a 10 round decision at almost 61, is supposed to fight again. He did well, but still lost. Better to die within a ring than in a hospital.
Have been reading all the thoughts and opinions, some very good ones. Yes it does seem strange he isnt more involved with the boxing. This year so far Mr McTaggart has been more involved with the boxing ( Prizefighter Promotion ) compared to Buchanan, " it SEEMS " I say this knowing probably 1% of the facts, the same as most here. Maybe he has done or is doing a bit that we just dont get to hear about. Regarding being a coach/trainer, there could be 1000 reasons for not being able. im sure there is people on the board here that know a lot more and rightly are not saying anything out of respect, good or bad. Maybe Kens got a new book out or a new album ? Maybe its all been taken out of context. No surprises there.
Duran is in horrible shape these days. Judiging by his hall of fame induction photos, Duran could not go 4 rounds today. Buchanan is over 60. He has nothing left to offer boxing. How much could Buchanan make? Maybe a few thousand dollars in his first fight back, but once the tabloid novelty wears off it will be over. And that novelty will end as soon as people see how sad Buchanan looks in the ring. If Buchanan wants to get back into boxing, perhaps he could make some money as a corner man, trainer, or tv/radio analysts. At his age, Buchanan should be passing on what he knows, not losing it in the ring.
this must be a joke. He should stay retired or maybe help train fighters. He was a v good fighter in his day but his day has long been gone
it was in the media about him sparring with lads at an amateur club (could have been sparta) months ago. he said he was only doing it to help out. whatever the reason, its sad news, especially as he may be britain's finest ever. barry mcguigan rates him and says he learnt loads whist sparring with him in the early 80's.
The only real sense I can make of this is if he has some product to sale afterward. When he begins to get some media attention he can say, "by the way my biography goes on sale tomorrow." Or his new instructional this, or his view of that, or so and so will be playing me in the new movie, or whatever he can sale. I just don't think that earning money by resuming a professional boxing career is going to prove very profitable for him at this stage.
I read that Mamby was carried by a journeyman for 10 rounds. Most that viewed it said it was sad and an embarrassment for boxing.
BremnerBomber has summed it up better then anyone else so far. Most of you are just getting nostalgic over a boxer you have probably never seen fight live or if you are honest know that much about really. It is common knowledge that Ken Buchanan has been as much of a **** head as a certain Paul Gazza Gascoigne. Whether they were greats of their sport in their time is neither here nor there. They are **** ups who would waste your time at every opportunity. Buchanan through his own stupidity has pissed away a fortune and is now just holding out his hand for a freebie. He has **** all intentions of getting in a ring in any shape (even for an old retired pensioner) and will only go through with it if no offer of sympathy cash comes his way. All he wants is a handout. I know some will regard my post as cruel but if you have ever had a friend or relative who is an alcoholic or drug addict you will recognise the signs. They dont want help just a handout. As for a pension fund for boxers that is a great idea and one that all active boxers and promoters should contribute too. Apologies if my post has offended you.
I cant see him bieng allowed to fight. If he is its wrong, its such a shame so many great fighters end up broke.
yes however I dont think Ken is asking for sympathy he is not sking for hand outs he is willing to get back in the ring and take his lumps for cash and lets face it - he is going to get killed if he is up against a serious operator 63 year old former alcholic fighting as a pro boxer - madness
