I don't know why people are giving Sky 'credit' for this though.

They were happy to sell the card as a pay per view with mainly just Khan v McCloskey and Macklin v Ghevor :patsch

Hope something is mentioned mate and if Team Khan cancels, it would be a ***** move. Not in the way that he'll ducking Dudey, but disrespectful to the fans as it's a near sell out and there's a good number coming for Ireland.

Also the amount of preperation that has been done by both camps would have been for nothing. Think he would lose a lot of fans if he cancels and give fans that already hate him ammo for future abuse and rightly so.

Amir Khan facing £1 million loss on Sky Box Office purse after pay-per-view event is ditched

Amir Khan's management team were left fuming at Sky Sports executives on Thursday after the World Boxing Association light-welterweight champion's fourth title defence against Irishman Paul McCloskey was moved from a pay-per-view event to Sky Sports 3.

It is understood that Khan's purse could be reduced by around 80 per cent, from £1.25 million to about £250,000.

A news conference was cancelled on Thursday afternoon as details emerged that the event was being switched, in the wake of reports of sluggish ticket sales for the MEN Arena. The fact that both Manchester City and United are playing in London on the weekend of the fight - a clear-out of prospective fans for the Arena - and Sky's apparent unwillingness to accept the standard of the overall fights, appears to have influenced Sky's decision.

Khan Promotions are understood to be seeking explanations over the decision.

Hatton Promotions, Ricky Hatton's promotional company, had attempted to bolster the fight card with rising British heavyweight Tyson Fury and Rendall Munroe, the super-bantamweight world title challenger added, but that appeared to have failed to persuade Barney Francis, head of Sky Sports, that the pay-per-view status of the fight should stand.

Indeed, Fury's contest with Hasim Rahman, who once defeated Lennox Lewis, has also collapsed this week with the American revealing he is not crossing the Atlantic. In short, a fine mess.

McCloskey, the unbeaten European light-welterweight champion, who was believed to be receiving around £200,000 as his purse, is also likely to feel the knock-on effect, with his team seeking to clarify their position. The bottom line with Khan-McCloskey as a pay-per-view event, with all due respect to McCloskey, a seasoned, unbeaten professional, was that the wider sporting public which 'buys into' pay-per-view fight nights, know little or nothing about McCloskey.

Moreover, Khan has been plying his trade in the United States for the last 16 months. Khan's last contest in the UK was against Dmitry Salita, in Newcastle, which was over, in trainer Freddie Roach's words "before he had even had a chance to walk down the steps", Salita knocked out within seconds after the first bell. That night, the event was headlined in many respects by a compelling victory for East Londoner Kevin Mitchell over Khan's Colombian nemesis, Breidis Prescott.

Indeed, Prescott might have been an easier fit for a pay-per-view fight against Khan. At least the wider public might have had an inkling as to why Khan was facing Prescott.

Khan still has vulnerabilities as he develops, but the McCloskey fight looks like a warm-up for a 140lb world title unification with American Timothy Bradley later in the year.

Boxing needed to start getting its business model right for events such as this, especially in the wake of the David Haye-Audley Harrison Sky Box Office debacle last year. This might be the first sign of a move to turn that around.

Was it me or did Ringside not mention the new channell once? This must have been a seriously rushed decision.

To me if I'm Khan at the very least I make Sky put it on Sky 1 where it can get the most audience.
