Ok, Round 8 of Archie Moore- Ezzard Charles was similiar to a slightly less degree of Round 10 of Castillo-Corrales I. Archie Moore was slightly ahead according to my source, and came out and stunned charles badly with a left hook followed by his trademark straight right hand with charles falling back into the ropes........ and heres charles out on his feet lying back on the ropes trying to survive the greatest finisher of all time and all time knockout king, and moore unloads sharp pinpoint punches at charles head trying to finish him off. Charles is rubbery legged ready to go, when he makes a miracle comeback catching moore with a last effort combination to stay alive(the way corrales landed on castillo to make him step back) and moore backed off hurt and then charles backed up moore, and out of nowhere landed one of the perfectly executed 1-2s left hook right cross combos, and moore went down out cold. chalres 1-2 in the 1940s was like a thing of art to watch on film.

Another one........on film 1946 Lloyd Marshall vs Ezzard Charles, Marshall a greeat great fighter comes out strong in round 1, and in round 2 floors charles with a cripping left to the liver(which can be seen on film). instead of panicking, charles gets up and systematically breeaks marshall down and in round 6 knocks out marshall with a left to the liver! taste of his own medicine!

Charles against bob satterfieldin 1954, the heavyweight divisions hardest puncher and perhaps most dangerous contender showed charles great recup powers and instincts. Charles now by 1954 slower than he used to be, was caught in round 1 by satterfield 3 punch combo, that put charles on ***** street. A source I have told me when he talked to ezzard in a interview, charles claimed "satterfield hit me so hard i didnt know where i was, i fought the rest of the sound purely on instinct." Charles amazing experience and recup powers enabled him to survive an early knockout loss, comeback in the 2nd round and knock out satterfield with one of the best one punch knockouts of the decade.

He had one of the best lefthook>right hand combinations I've seen. Extremely smooth.

He also had TREMENDOUS balance-you can see this even with the given footage.

Charles did not have one particular thing that was much better then his opponents like legendary power. But he could do it all he was excellent infighter had an excellent jab, great footwork, very good defence and was very durable. It took a lot to stop him he would often get up to win first time he was stopped he was 22 fighting a great like Marshall and it took 8 knockdowns to stop him. Also at 175lbs before he killed Baroudi he had some serious power personally I think hit harder then fighters like Spinks who was a big hitter at the weight.

Another thing he had was his ring IQ like when he was only 21 when he beat Burley a great ring technician twice. Also for all three Moore fights Archie would come out with a different style and yet Charles would always figure him out and get the win. Plus Charles had a huge amount of heart look at the beating he took from Marciano and stood strong and lasted the full 15. Many compare a prime Charles to Ray Robinson and there are a lot of similarities but Charles was the better in fighter while Ray probably had a better chin for his weight.

    More examples of his durability:

    1943-01-07 165 Jimmy Bivins 174 31-5-0 Arena, Cleveland, Ohio, United States L UD 10 10
Charles took seven counts: four times for nine-counts in round three; for a nine-count in round four; for a nine-count in round five; and for a two count at the bell in round eight.

    1943-03-31 168 Lloyd Marshall 165 39-6-2 Arena, Cleveland, Ohio, United States L TKO 8 10
    ~ time: 0:25 | referee: Jackie Davis ~
Charles was knocked down eight times.

Nowadays these fights would have been stopped by the third or fourth KD. No way that Ezz would have made the distance against Bivins.

Minotauro amazing post. charles rates in my top 5 p4p of all time. Just look at what he accomplished from 160-heavyweight. at 160 he beat burley 2x, 175lb beat moore 3x, and at heavyweight beat jersey joe walcott 2x.

    simply amazing

    Also Minaturo,

ESPN classic this weekend is playing ezzard charles vs tommy harrison 1953. I suggest checking it out. Charles was past his prime by 1953, but still looked razor sharp all the way up to 1954 IMO.
