I'm not sure if this is true but Naseem Hamed was supposed to have rocked future Cruiserweight champ Johnny Nelson. Not in sparring but Naz was also supposed to have decked Junior Witter when Witter told Naz to treat Brendan Ingle with more respect.
LOL, talking about Naz. Reminds me of the so called "punch up" that Naz and Eubank had at Heathrow airport. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lh2_ciOI3Nk
Your right. Ayala was only 14, which makes it even more humiliating. First 2 rounds were close, third round he kicked his ass.
I was there when Roy and Reggie Johnson sparred... I remember it being very good sparring and much more competitive than most people I saw RJ spar back then but I wouldnt exactly say Reggie was beating RJ down or anything...also, though, when Roy was 16 I doubt he was sparring with Prince Charles Williams...I never heard anyone ever say Roy boxed with him and if he had it would be surprising because when Roy was 16 he only weighed about 135 pounds...
I have a video of Chavez TOYING with Oscar De La Hoya before the 1992 Olympics...he also dropped Oscar for a flash knockdown with a very short, sneaky right hand...I have it on VHS...
I don't think I would say IN MOST CASES...I think it is a thing where more cases are hard sparring than not so hard...also, some guys in the gym are just more relaxed, calmer, able to see better etc...I think in my case I had much better gym sessions with better fighters than I sometimes did in real fights...one BIG thing to remember is that usually when u see a guy spar he is feeling good, eating etc etc...usually when u see a guy on fight night he has spent the previous week or so REALLY struggling with his weight so he doesnt have the same mental strength that he normally does...also. I saw a joureyman -drug using- middleweight absolutely WRECK a seriously hard punchin world ranked featherweight...out COLD...
toks owoh dropped calzaghe in sparring, and enzo told him to go home, when toks rang them the next day to spar again, enzo didnt want him in the gym.
Yeah. My impression of that session was that Toney was letting Danny fire at will and was working on his defensive skills. He was allowing himself to be backed onto the ropes and was just avoiding most of the punches. Then he would stop working on his defence for a bit and start to hit back. BAM BAM BAM! Quick percussive and accurate infighting shots. Then he would relax again and let Danny fire away. Danny did good against a legendary guy who was much bigger and more experienced than him. But most of where he looked good was because Toney let him. Cause I think they were working on different aspects of their fight game, which is what sparring is all about. Oh yeah, Toney did walk off screaming for someone to get him his gun.
Friday did have Mike over in preparation for his fight with Cliff Ettiene, Mike said he was hurt badly but Friday played it down and told me it was a small clip upside his head on the inside and Tyson just blacked out.. Mike insisted he Friday hurt him and it was a very solid shot to the temple.. Mike was on a few prescribed drugs at that time though for some depression which honestly could have been a factor.. mirageboxing.blogspot.com
