It's not my absolute favourite, but Ali-Norton II deserves a mention. I don't think I've seen another HW-fight where both fighters excels so much in technical, tactical and physical terms. It's not quite as exciting as FOTC or Manilla or as filled with drama as Zaire, but when it just comes to watching the art of boxing performed by two fighters this is my favourite Ali fight. And he had some good ones.

Would you mind if I stole all of these aswell? I've watched and loved all of these fights except for Dempsey-Firpo, and the full Walcott and Charles fights.

You must have really enjoyed Lewis-Tyson. :D

I think most of the good fights have been taken already, but I did enjoy Lewis' win over Ruddock a lot. (Not at the time mind, I was a Ruddock fan.)

Also Morrison v Ruddock was good.
    Mercer v Morrison (Brutal KO)
    Evander Holyfield v Bert Cooper
Pierre Coetzer v Johnny Du Plooy (short but sweet - on youtube)
Andrew Golota v Samson Po'hua (sp?)
Tyson v Botha (fight was quite boring, but KO was superb)

Recently, I've derived a great deal of enjoyment over Quarry/Spencer and Quarry/Lyle, particularly as I viewed them within the context of having watched Spencer/Terrell and Lyle/Shavers. These wins by Jerry are an excellent tonic for the sickening repetition with which ESPN has rebroadcast Ali/Quarry II over the years. Finally, we can see for ourselves why Foreman has been praising Quarry so highly for such a long time.

I'm not sure if you're joking, but FOTC is as eventful as it gets.

Rounds 1-5: Ali stands toe to toe with Frazier with a lot of punch exchanges.
Round 7-10: Frazier comes on strong and Ali is looking for ways to get a second wind.
Round 11: Frazier has Ali reeling all over the ring, Ali seems done. It this point, it does not seem likely Ali can finish 12 rounds, let alone 15.
Round 12-14: Amazingly, Ali comes back and might have taken one or more of these rounds.
Round 15: After landing left hooks all throughout, Joe finally finds the left hook that puts Ali on his ass and has Ali holding on/retreating until the final bell.

Taking that, the ability of both fighters and the gigantic magnitude of this fight, i think this is the best HW fight of all time.

By the way, i didn't enjoy Holmes-Norton as much as most did. I like his fights with Weaver, Witherspoon and Shavers II better.

Lyle-Foreman. Cosell's histrionics during the slugfest were priceless. There's no one around now that brought the electricity to a sport like Howard Cosell IMO. The Monday Night Football lead ins were classic.

December 3, 1979: "You are watching ABC's Monday Night Football featuring the Oakland Raiders and their veteran lefty quarterback Kenny "the snake" Stabler - enjoying a remarkable comeback after a dismal 1978 campaign. Stabler's favorite target is the bruising perenial all-pro tightend Dave Casper, the best in the business. The Saints have the underrated Archie Manning at the helm and the bespectacled running back Chuck Muncie - who runs like a mack truck."

I don't care about the magnitude of a fight. They were the same things repeating over and over. I don't care about toughness and courage, when there's little skills or cleverness shown by either fighter. Boring fight.

I like almost any fight where Tyson brutally destroys his opponent, or at least gives them a good beating throughout the distance (Ruddock 2).

    • Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier I and III
    • Muhammad Ali-George Foreman
    • Bert Cooper-Michael Moorer
    • Evander Holyfield-Michael Dokes
    • Riddick Bowe-Evander Holyfield (all 3 fights)
    • Riddick Bowe-Andrew Golota II
    • David Tua-Daniel Izon
    • Lamon Brewster-Sergei Liakhovich
