Sure, the ref or doc could've let the fight continue. But the ref could've also stopped the fight when Silva was landing a series of hard shots on Fedor while they were on the ground. I think it makes more sense to have stopped it due to Fedor getting his head smashed in. Besides, Fedor already admitted defeat. Otherwise he would've said something along the lines of, "I felt the fight was stopped too early. I would have came back strong in the 3rd round. I still feel confident and would like a chance to redeem myself."
He survived, fought valiantly, never gave up. The size and strength difference really came through this time. There was no way he was going to buck Bigfoot off, might have worked against a smaller man, but to some degree it's nearly impossible to get a guy off full mount that outweighs you by 50lbs, and is a bjj blackbelt. Silva came in at nearly 300lbs. Fedor escaped a more crushing loss by grit. Always going to be a fan, and props to Bigfoot for the win, and showing class in victory.
