Danny was getting rocked by big shots from Toney - granted he hung in there (as is his way), and absorbed a lot of punishment and looked good against the much bigger guy, but healthwise I don't think it was a good idea for Green. A good confidence booster perhaps, and a way to gain some publicity in the US, but still not the best idea for a skinny SMW to mix it up with an overweight and powerful heavyweight...gnome sane?
Fenechs a cockhead & yes he turned green into one as well. Green blew the beyer fight, everyone knows not to **** around with anything slightly out of the boxing books in Germany. And the Sullivan fight was a disgrace on Fenech as a trainer & cornerman, to keep sending green out in the state he was in only to try & obtain a KO over an opponent who doesn't get koed. Fenech's ego even overides his common sense with the watch stealing bull****. That about sums up the mentality of the ******. I saw an add for kareoke singing on tv with him in it. Still clinging on to the limelight he desperately yearns for.
Danny Green was a strong fighter with little skill. Fenech didn't add or detract from his core constitution as a fighter. With a bit of luck he could have beaten the average Beyer, but even if he did, he still would have had a world of trouble with solid B-list technicians.
Dont know about the first part mate.....Jeff inspired Green and gave him huge confidence at the start and I guess Green is the only guy that will know how much his confidence was damaged when Jeff had other things on instead of being with Green. Agree that Green is tough but would be troubled with solid b-grade fighters....just like Mundine showed.
I for one feel Green never realised his full potential, and he's a guy with as much heart as any fighter out there, so what went wrong?
This is a funny thread Not sure if i agree with everything...Was an interesting read but. Anenigma, do you think Green would have been a big name by himself? Or do you think that the only reason he got as much publicity as he did was because of Choc? Also, when you say Jeff ruined Green's career... How much more could he have done? Green's best win was against an oldish Lucas. A guy who was only a gatekeeper at best anyway. At SMW, would Danny have beaten Calzaghe? Lacy pre Calzaghe and injury? Kessler? In all honesty, Beyer was one of the most average/poor world champs to hold a title in recent years, and Green was given the second opportunity and farked it. You can look for reasons why, but at the end of the day, he had 12 rounds to get the job done, and simply wasn't good enough. I don't think Green would have been known at all if it weren't for Choc. He is a seemingly nice guy... In the big scheme of things though nice = boring. TO capture the attention of the australian general public, to whom boxing is only of minor interest, he would need to be either * Extremely charismatic, interesting, unique as a person * Exceptionally talented * Very contraversial. In reality he was none of these. Just a good solid fighter, who fought at a world class level. Look at a guy like Paul Briggs for example in comparison. Paul is a very interesting character, with a great life story. A former world kickboxing champ. A guy who looks, personality and talent wise is very similar to Green (great fighter, comes across as being quite humble and genuine, down to earth, and still has the image of the typical white aussie male i guess). Had some CRACKING fights with Adamek, absolute Wars (Green never had fights of this level and excitement)... Yet still, he isn't a superstar to the general public. Really outside of genuine fight fans in Australia, he is probably relatively unknown. If anythign i would say danny green is definitely more well known to the average person on the street. I think it really shows that looking at him, comparatively to Green, the only reason Green got as much attention as he did was becaue of Choc. Reality is if it weren't for Choc and their rivalry, Green would have been just a good fighter, that faded away into obscurity, maybe gaining a minor title or somethign along the way. I don't care about being politically correct, couldnt' give a fark. I just don't think race or look has anything to do with it in Greens case. At the end of the day, it comes down to the fact that boxing in Australia is just not a mainstream sport.
I disagree. I don't think Danny Green was ever that good. Solid fundamentals. Good chin. Good power. Decent handspeed. Nothing that stands out though, or that would have done anything against the likes of Kessler, Calzaghe even Lacy before the injury. Really, SMW was a very weak division at the time Green was fighting in it. Even still, he really would never have troubled the best guys. Lets have a look at the surrounding divisions now.... See how he matches up. Pavlik Abraham Kessler Calzaghe Hopkins Dawson Taylor Bute All these guys beat him IMO. Maybe he would have a shot vs AA, or Bute, i wouldn't bet on it though. Even against the second tier crop: Andrade Andre Ward Andre Dirrell Carl Froch Zsolt Erdei etc etc He would have a very tough time. Matches that could realistically go either way very easily. I think some here are letting their patriotic view of Green cloud their judgement.
Fenech probably gave him a career if anything. Fenech's hate for Mundine rubbed off on Green and put him into the spotlight, the rest is history. Had Green been brought through with some other trainer, he'd probably have achieved around the same as what he did but be millions of dollars less off.
All i said was he didnt reach his potential. I didnt say he would beat any of those guys u mentioned. Although, if he did reach his potential, i give him a better chance than u. His power would unsettle a lot of those guys, enough to beat them? Maybe some of them.
His power was never that great, good yes, but not great. He certainly doestn' have the one punch power needed to make it a factor against elite level guys. He was no Julian Jackson, just a guy with good power who knocked out a lot of overmatched opponents. I wouldn't even put him up there in power with Edison Miranda, Arthur Abraham or Kelly Pavlik. Slightly below most likely. How did he not reach his potential out of curiosity? What would reaching his potential mean? Would he become far better technically? Would his natural ability somehow improve? I'm puzzled on that one.
I agree with Jambo, Green was a good fighter, not great. In regards to him reaching him his full potential, he managed 3 world title fights, blew the 1st with beyer, showed how limited he was in the rematch & then won the world belt against drews albeit in probably the worst world title fight I've ever seen an aussie fighter in. Then he managed a huge payday against mandy & once again showed how limited as a fighter he was. To me he over exceeded as the fighter he was. As someone else mentioned Paul Briggs was years ahead as a fighter but ran into Adamek, who still is a very good fighter worldwide.
