Well we are back for the 13th installment of Fight of the week, where we review, rescore and remember some historic fights of the past. This week the FOTW time machine takes us back to May 20, 1983, Dunes Hotel & Casino, Outdoor Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada

    @JohnThomas1 and @RulesMakeItInteresting
Mentioned this fight as a possible FOTW in a thread 2 months ago:
    https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...ollowing-fighters.665164/page-3#post-20973740

Controversy hangs over these 2 fighters. Dokes and Weaver met on December 10, 1982. Dokes would win the WBA HW title from Weaver on a controversial stoppage that many felt was to soon, or as SRL would opine the referee panicked. This was just a month after the tragic Mancini vs Kim fight, so the impact of that fight can be felt at this time.

This would set the stage for a rematch to resolve the controversy....but instead it would lead to. Controversial decision. Was the decision right or wrong? Well, you and I get to decide it, 38 years later!

Sit back, buckle up and enjoy.

And the first fight should anyone want to check it out for reference:

I scored this one for Mike Weaver 146-141 or 9-4-2, but most of the rounds could go either way and I scored them for MW because he was the aggressor. Michael Dokes showed a lot of heart, but IMO, he was not effective enough going backward to win most of the rounds. I scored 1 and 15 EVEN, 2,4,6,7,8,9,10,13,14 for MW, 3,5,11,12 for MD. While I scored for MW, I wouldn't have any problem with anyone who scored it the opposite way for MD. There were few if any dominant rounds in this one.

MW had a nice body attack, and landed good jabs, hooks and right hands to the head too, but MD handled them well. MD jabbed well and occasionally landed a good right hand. They both had enough left in the last round to make it an interesting round. Two big fighters (218.5 and 223 I believe) and they fought at a steady pace all the way.

Oh, I watched this a month ago but didn't score it. Maybe I'll score it if I watch it again.

I think Weaver edged this fight. It was a decent 15 rounder.
I've never really understood why 15 rounders were phased out but I believe the best theory is because at the time TV networks in the USA could fit a 12-rounder into a 1 hour slot with some ad breaks too, where a full 15 rounder was a bit too long.

I could only make it through 10 rounds of this one; tough to watch, it was like a sparring session, just couldn't get into it. I scored it through perhaps eight rounds, with them trading rounds as if by some tacit agreement.

I scored it the same, but in no way did I see the fight going the other way, or Dokes winning it. I thought Dokes looked pretty meh through a great deal of the fight...unfortunately for some reason Weaver didn't look as "on" as he should have either, at times he seemed to be doing that quasi-sleepwalking routine he pulled in his most mystifying performances. Here was a guy (Weaver) who had Tyson-level power, but at times just seemed to throw it away, often for completely inexplicable reasons.

I'd personally be surprised to see anyone score this anything over one point for Dokes (even the draw was highly dubious to me). He just didn't do enough, while to my eyes Weaver most certainly did (despite neither setting the world on fire as they did it).

Had Weaver won this, I guess he would have faced Page. And, given the performance of Page against Berbick, I would have bet on Weaver.

Michael Dokes v Mike Weaver 2

Not very confident in my card as this was a tricky one to score. I thought it was a pretty horrible one to watch as well outside of the first and final rounds.

    1 10-9
    2 9-10
    3 10-9 (close)
    4 9-10 (close)
5 10-9 (nice boxing from Dokes)
    6 10-9
    7 10-10
    8 9-10 (close)
    9 9-10 (Dokes wobbled a bit)
    10 9-10
    11 10-9
    12 10-9 (close)
    13 9-10
    14 9-10
    15 10-9 (close)

    Dokes 143-143 Weaver

I agree with you about Weaver, he seemed to have everything physically. Enough speed and quickness, power, boxing skills, jab, stamina, etc., he just seldom if ever put it all together. He is a guy that might beat anybody or he might lose to anybody, just depended on whether he was motivated or not. Seems like if the other guy didn't press Weaver or make him fight, Weaver wouldn't press him either.

He was probably frustrating for his own handlers, and he probably caused his opponent's handlers a lot of worry too, all for the same reason, he was "capable" and he "might" get motivated and win the fight, but he might just walk around and not do enough to win.

Michael Dokes vs. Mike Weaver II

You guys must forgive me. I just had too much of a memory of those last 5 rounds and just couldn't revisit this. I just remember the sloppy, mauling last 5. This card was about 2 years old but still valid, as I'm not putting myself through this again.

    Round 1: 10-9 Dokes
    Round 2: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 3: 10-9 Dokes
    Round 4: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 5: 10-9 Dokes
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 8: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 9: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 10: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 11: 10-9 Dokes
    Round 12: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 13: 10-10 Even
    Round 14: 10-9 Weaver
    Round 15: 10-9 Weaver

Total: 146-141 Weaver (actual scores: 143-143, 144-144 and a 145-141 for Dokes for a Majority Draw)
