Manny is great fighter, I have been a fan of his for a long time and I have staunchly (But sensibly) defended him throughout the whole ped fiasco, but no matter how laudable his achievements are I for one cannot consider him a high-ranking ATG simply because of one inescapable fact. At present he has decided not to fight Mayweather! How can one fight mean so much to a fighters legacy? Because Floyd is also a great fighter who is "Prime" and comfortable at the weight which they would fight at! How many "Prime" great opponents have Floyd and Manny fought? Put it another way, how many "Prime" opponents has Floyd fought who you consider were as good as Pacquiao? How many "Prime" opponents has Manny fought who you consider were as good as Mayweather? I respect both Manny and Floyd but we currently have the ludicrous situation whereby two fighters, both fighting in the same weight class, are proudly boasting that they are the p4p #1, yet they will not fight each other!! It is beyond preposterous!!! $40million and a shot at boxing immortality is not sufficient to persuade these two jokers to fight each other!! That is to their detriment and the boxing fans of generations to come will judge them accordingly. Should they meet, the winner will have earned the right to be considered amongst the true "Greats" and the loser, by future achievements, may also achieve such lofty status, but if they never fight they should never be considered high-ranking ATGs, simply because they never fought each other!!
Great post. Hard to argue against this. One reason I am such a big fan of Hoya is that whatever you think of him he left nothing to the imagination. He stretched himself toward every fighter and every fighter's style. You knew what he was capable of and you knew his limitations. You saw him hit the ceiling as to his weight classes by trying to unify a division he didn't belong in. Nowadays there is too much to the imagination. We have to imagine what could be. At the same time fighters look invincible because they do not challenge themselves. Of course Mayweather will look unbeatable when he has avoided challenges within his own division for years. DLH looked invincible at one point but he continued to climb in weight and fought everyone within those classes. DLH ended up looking vulnerable but like many fighters of the past it has all to be taken together, as a whole career to make sense of it.
I was always a fan of Oscar's (Not as much as my missus mind you). The man was a great fighter and he (To my knowledge) never shirked a challenge, which is a truly admirable quality! He could have taken the "Floyd" route and protected his "0" but he didn't!! I will always consider him a great fighter and I just wish that he hadn't fought Floyd and Manny because he was obviously past prime! But that was DLH!!
It was passing of the torch. Well at least the Floyd fight. Good thing that was. Were left with the fighter who's notable wins are "what ifs." The Manny fight was nothing but money for DLH. He overreached and understimated the little guy.
Corrales and Castillo are good, not great fighters. If you want to count them as great, that's fine but then Oscar's resume is even more impressive and he has a bunch of victims of that caliber.
None of these fighters have **** on this guy http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=4741&cat=boxer
