Hi Pugguy. Good call, soon after the fight was stopped I have seen a picture in a very old Ring of Jeffries face, and it was indeed swollen, bruised, and looked like maybe his nose was broken, that said his stoicism was commendable, it must have been fairly obvious to the crowd in attendance, that Jeffries had little to offer after a few rounds, earlier posters were in debate as to whether Ali ,in outpointing Terrell , administered a bad beating, I was wondering if there are some similarities in the fights, from what we have seen and read on the Johnson/Jeffries contest, Jack seemed in no hurry to end the suffering of big Jim, moreover his verbal barbs, and taunts, suggested he was enjoying the beat down, the phrase in print looks barbaric, such is the nature of our sport I am afraid, likewise Ali seemed to relish the beating of Ernie, only difference is Johnson wore a smile throughout, where by Ali had the look of hate on his face. In about 1969 the Ring had a piece on the Johnson/Jeffries fight, and on the front cover in colour, was a picture of both combatants in the ring, Johnson hands on hips, smiling and looking like he was about to enter a morris dancing comp, and Jeffries while physically looking huge and in shape, he really was an imposing figure, his face showed angst, and foreboding, he knew then that he was in for a rough afternoon, all the talk of Johnsons cowardice, and yellow streak, went out of the window, before him was a supremely confidante adversary, he looked in fantastic condition, smiling and waving to friends and associates this must have unnerved the already imploding Jeffries. The title on the cover " The title fight that shook the World " a very apt verse. stay safe buddy, chat soon.
Excellent write up Mike. While I do think Johnson carried Jeff, it doesn’t at all diminish the will and courage Jeffries displayed to hang in there for as long as he possibly could. The force behind Johnson’s constant stream of head snapping uppercuts can’t be refuted - they were brutal. Yeah, it seemed Ali was trying to get Ernie out of there - IIRC, Ali had Terrell going good in round 7. Of course, Terrell had those arms high, glued to and guarding his head. He was really asking for a concentrated body attack - but that wasn’t Ali’s thing. Too bad. It might’ve brought the guard down for Ali to execute the KO or stoppage. Even after the fight, Ali flatly admitted that he didn’t carry Terrell. Terrell’s eyes were slits but facial damage elsewhere wasn’t apparent - at least not to me.
This one was on USA Tuesday Night Fights back in the day. Rather brutal ending to this one. Should be time-stamped correctly where Benton starts getting bombed... This content is protected

Poor Pete Ranzany suffered 2 of the most brutal TKO's I've ever seen. In his fights with Pipino Cuevas and Sugar Ray Leonard, Pete was nearly decapitated with brutal, non-stop head punches. He was staggering like a drunk sailor on leave until the ref finally stopped the fights.
