I don't think so. He showed a great deal of courage in Toledo, but that was the first time he ever hit the deck. Luther McCarty, Frank Moran and Jack Johnson weren't able to drop him in an era of five ounce gloves. Dempsey himself wasn't able to floor Jess again, although some of his bodyshots in the second and third rounds were still hard enough to lift Willard off his feet. Four years later, Jess stood up to everything Firpo could pitch at him for seven rounds. It took a sustained bombardment of overhand rights to finally land him in the eighth. I don't consider him to have had anything resembling a weak chin. Dempsey just had supermortal power in his punches that afternoon.
