Barry McGuigan fighting Steve Cruz in Nevada with the searing heat on his back on a time that suited TV also back in the UK and Ireland, neither was a well thought out strategy, cost him his title and a lot of money!
Hi Guys. Not unlike Ali/ Foreman, the brave and calculated mission of Michael Watson to absorb all that Benn could throw at him, which was considerable, counter attack with well placed and timed counters, to the extent that Benn gassed out, and afforded Michael a hard fought victory, add to that I was there, albeit forecast a resolute win for Nigel, thoroughly enjoyed the night. stay safe guys, chat soon. Mike.
Will never forget just how astonishingly dumb it was for Srisaket Sor Rungvisai to make the conscious decision to fight orthodox against Juan Francisco Estrada in their rematch. He had just beaten him previously and had a good chance to retain his belts but for whatever reason he elects to fight orthodox for most of the fight where he gets easily outboxed only for him to revert back to his usual southpaw stance in the late rounds where he’s having his best success but had already gave away the fight by then. If you thought Hagler switching stances against Leonard was bone headed this was even more unforgivable.
Hagler's team vetoing Harry Gibbs as one of the judges for Hagler Leonard, Jojo Guerra replaced Gibbs scored it 118-110 Leonard. Harry Gibbs was asked to judge the contest by ITV, in the studio he had his card 115-113 to Hagler. Pat Petronelli's strategy to find an alternative judge cost MMH the fight it seems.
I just did not understand what he was doing against Wardley. Parker was faced with a lesser skilled opponent who has big power and loves a firefight, and as you point out, Parker is a pretty good outboxer. So instead his gameplan was stand toe to toe and toe, have a war. I'm sorry, what? He gave up every single advantage he had.
No way Leonard could have lost the decision, even had he never thrown a punch. Some fights are lost the second they are made due to rigged refs and judges.
Scott Quigg did virtually nothing for the first 6 or 7 rounds Vs Frampton; not sure if the game plan was the come alive late and take Frampton out using the engine Quigg was renowned for, or whether he was just overawed by the occasion ,but when he came alive (if memory serves me correctly ) he kinda bossed it , but it was too little far too late
Benny Paret insulting Emile Griffith at the weigh in before the trilogy fight that ended in him slipping into a coma and dying was a really sad event. It was an comment Paret didn't need to make about EG private life. In an era where sexuality could ruin an athlete or actors career, it was like putting gasoline on a fire.
Gerald McClellan deciding to get rid of Manny Steward and basically self train for the Nigel Benn fight was a disaster of a move a chaos training camp saved him some money but at a terrible cost. Steward would of seen he was distressed between rounds towards the end of the fight, unqualified corner way out of it's depth.
Michael Grant definitely had a bad strategy fighting against Lennox. Wlad didn't have any strategy fighting against Fury.
