I was believing the DDD hype until he blocked Joe Joyce’s jab with his eye socket eighty-seven times in a row.
Zab Judah (still had a very good career though) Chad Dawson Allan Green Mike Jones Jesse Hart Jameel McCline (mostly because I was a fan of Jimmy Glenn (RIP) and his bar lol)
Guinn showed glimpses of what could of been and had some nice wins as he was coming along. It always felt like he never wanted to kick it into a higher gear when he had to. He was on that infamous ring magazine cover too with Mesi and Harrison about them being the future of the heavyweights. Ill go with lesser known Featherweight Angel Vasquez, i thought he was at the very least going to win a title.
Well, I didn’t discover this till I moved to Bangor ME, but I believe he is the only world champ from Maine, so while he was not great he is a celebrity in these parts of the world even today lol.
I like Joey Gamache still. Lot of fond memories of reading about him in KO Magazine after his victories. He just seemed to belie the odds and keep on performing, until of course he ran into the bigger fish. I liked his bravado and liked his story. At my age then, I just thought maybe he could really do all the things he was bragging up, so I bragged him up! He never disappointed me. Went pretty far when you weigh all factors. I didn't know he was from Maine, though. lol.
Neither did I till I moved here lol. My only standout memory was his loss to Tony Lopez. But when I moved here I did a little digging and checked some more stuff out. Fun fighter and now is a pretty high profile trainer.
I was convinced Michael Dokes was the heir apparent to Larry Holmes at heavyweight. Maybe he could have been but he didn’t live the way a champion has to live. But my real confession: I saw Nino La Rocca against a shopworn Pete Ranzany and concluded that nobody was going to be able to deal with this flashy Italian’s speed and slickness. He was just a well-matched Euro-level guy, alas.
I was just a lad, but I used to think Charlie Weir was invincible. https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/22664
Pinklon Thomas. With that stiff hard jab I thought he’d be on top for awhile. Oops. In more recent years Seth Mitchell he seemed to have lots of drive and a great work ethic. Once that chin got tapped though the book was out. I wouldn’t say I over hyped him I just saw some things.
For a minute I thought David Price was the real deal. Sometime after the Fraudly victory. Give me this, the guy could hit... if you stood still and didn't hit back. There, I admitted it.
At the time the Price who was flattening Audley and Skelton, I would have him as a warm favourite over Fury.
I was on a message board, that now no longer exists, where a bunch of people, after Guinn beat Grant, were convinced Dominick Guinn was the "next Joe Louis."
