As a 15 year old boy who used to train in the same gym as Ricky Burns and one who was absolutely obsessed with the sport of boxing, I honestly think you would struggle to find someone who was as emotionally attached to a fighter as I was. My mum wouldn't let me go down to leeds for the Carl Johanneson fight and so I had to stay up here and watch it on the tele. I can honestly say that when he went down for the first time I was crying my ****ing eyes out but trying hard not to show it infront of my Dad, didn't work though. After that fight Ricky left the gym and I became less supportive of him. He's still my favorite fighter though and I am 100 percent behind, just not so die hard anymore. I think ricky always knew how much I idolised him and so he was always making an effort to be sound to me by making conversation or offering me a lift, which may not seem like a lot but it certainly meant alot to a 15 year old boxing fanatic. I was a hatton fan up until just after the mayweather fight, until he started acting like a knob and started getting national acclaim. Now I don't bother with him really.
i miss the days of tyson although i only remember the days after he was released from prison , the buzz and excitment whenever one of his fights was on was unreal glad hatton is finished i used to like him but got sick of his shite talking
anthony farnell always great to watch loved a good tear up carl thomson deserves a mention as well on the world stage chico corrales
Nice post Farnell, Gomez and Hatton were all good to watch at the MEN - some top nights there watching them And Chico, how quickly people have forgotten him eh :-(
Your nuthuggery of burns was plain to see on here at the time. You couldn't see any way he could get beat by anyone and especially by alex arthur. In the end it was a routine way for arthur that night. Still it's good that he appreciated your support if it's the case. :good
I think I genuinely believed that at 22 he would have counterpunched himself to victory against anyone in the world, that's how easy he made it look in the Earl fight. I ended up copying his style exactly for myself (though obviously not as good). I even ended up picking up his bad habits just because I watched him so much.
yeah I miss the big Lennox Lewis nights. On the other hand i'm gald the whole Hatton farce is all but over.
Pretty much the whole middleweight and heavyweight divisions of the nineties. Also Morales and Barrera.
i wasnt even born but i just wish i was around then the man was Alexis Arguello, just gentlemanary behavious has never been seen in a ring to the standard of him and the way he combined artistery with brutal efficiency. my favrouite fighter of all time
