Fights That People Remember Incorrectly

Many fighters before Ali fought against the ropes....Viewers may have not seen it before and maybe they were surprised to see Ali against the ropes against Foreman, but that doesn't mean he was really losing. He was taking hard shots to the body but landing cleanly, repeatedly, to Foreman's face. As soon as he went to the ropes in the 2nd, he started landing shots on Foreman's face. And continued to land them all night.

Complete revisionist history in the way how Foreman was supposedly dominating and beating the crap out of Ali until he tired out.

 

Would have-could have. The fact is he didn't. Hearns didn't even stagger to his corner after the ref stopped the fight. We all know that Hearns can go down when he is really hurt, the fact that Leonard never put him down makes me think he wasn't hurt bad enough to stop the fight. Even the announcers thought the stoppage was premature.

 

You're ignoring that Hearns ended the previous round dead on his feet, being held up by the ropes and had to take an 8 count.

He was done. Good stoppage.

Totally disagree on Ike vs Oscar fight i watched it numerous times it was good fight to watch, at least for me, to many fans prefer brawling between C level fighter.

 

Cotto fought very well against Mayweather and on my card took three rounds and earned a share of another. He remained competitive through the first nine, until Mayweather surged in the final quarter. He finished well back, but acquitted himself better than Guerrero and Canelo- and took rounds more clearly than they did.

 

Great thread. It's unfortunate that people that know nothing create some of these wrongful opinions and skewed memories that are repeated and it takes away from the perception of greatness with certain fighters.

 

Cotto-Mayweather was competitive. 9-3 or 8-4 Mayweather are good scores. It was a great fight til round 9 as the poster above said.

Saying he just walked forward and ate shots is dumb. He landed his fair share of good punches on Mayweather and was competitive in some rounds that Mayweather won. A little more in certain spots and that fight could have been even closer.

 

Chavez/Taylor I, people always say Taylor completely schooled Chavez all fight long yet Taylor was the one who suffered a broken eye socket, broken ribs, badly busted up face, had a lot of blood pumped from his stomach, was pissing blood for weeks and was in hospital for almost 2 weeks following the fight.

 

Mayweather-De La Hoya: I've heard people talk about this as if Oscar pushed Floyd to the brink of defeat; and some people say that Mayweather was lucky to get the win. Sure, Oscar won a few rounds based on work rate, while Floyd was coasting, but Floyd was clearly the superior fighter - and I actually think the fact it was an SD reflects better on Oscar than he deserved.

There's definitely revisionist history on this fight.

Taylor was winning on the cards but he certainly was taking a beating. He was winning by outworking Chavez. He threw an insane amount of punches. He was still taking hard shots throughout, in the 2nd round Chavez landed a great right over Taylor's jab and a short left hook that re-opened some cuts in Taylor's mouth.

The HBO commentary was very one-sided, with Lampley doing his cheerleader act, even claiming Chavez was about to go down in the 10th.

The aftermath has revisionist history too. Taylor still had some success afterwards despite already being on the downside. And people also act like it was Chavez alone that made Taylor brain-damaged. Did they not see other fights that Taylor had, or think about the punishment he probably took in sparring?

Not to mention the fact that Cotto was DEMOLISHED physically and mentally by Margarito. Pac waited on the sidelines as usual while the division beat each other up before Manny got the balls to weight drain and fight them.

 

I am still shocked when I see people talk about Ali/Foreman like that. I always wonder if they are trolling or not. Foreman had won maybe a round or two and it wasn't cause he landed any bombs.
