Morales was well in the Maidana fight and even buckled Chino.

Pretty much agree with you. Taylor was landing the flashier punches & was ahead in the fight. However, Chavez was landing the heavier punches especially to the body & was punishing Taylor.
I had Taylor slightly ahead but I felt that Chavez was imposing his will in the championship rounds. The stop by Richard Steele was completely justified & Taylor was never the same!:-(

I was actually talking to my brother about how often this happens. Not just with boxing, but pretty much any public event.

The media and all the fans just start running with overly simplified ideas of what actually happened.

As a younger guy, I had to do my own research on great fights of the past, and to my surprise, a LOT of them were completely different than what I was expecting based on what I heard before the fight

    Ali-Foreman was a great example

Giovani Segura vs. Ivan Calderon I - People remember it incorrectly, well, because most everybody hasn't seen it and views it as an "un***y" Ring Magazine choice for Fight of the Year. There might not have been one better since it.

Macro Huck vs. Denis Lebedev - It was not a "complete robbery." 115-113 Lebedev for me and I can't see it too much wider.

Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao IV - "Manny was dominating and well on his way to stopping JMM next round!" is the dumbest statement that could be made about that fight. He had been dropped hard earlier in the fight, he was getting rocked in the final round of the fight during his ill advised onslaught, and he got KO'd cold before the fight even hit the half way point.

Floyd Mayweather vs. DeMarcus Corley - First of all, Floyd wasn't "stunned" by Corley's punch in, what, the fourth round or whatever that people cling to as one of a few moments he has ever been buzzed in his career. Corley lost every round or all but one of the fight in what was an offensive unleashing by Mayweather. Very entertaining one sided fight with Corley showcasing himself with a good effort.

Danny Garcia vs. Amir Khan - 1. Anyone who thinks Garcia's first KD was a "lucky shot." 2. Anyone who takes a defensive tone when saying Khan was dominating the fight until the KD. Well, guess what? That was hardly dominating and it was for a whopping two rounds. Cool story.

Nonito Donaire vs. Vazquez/Mathebula/Nishioka - The notion that Donaire's offense was somehow horrible and proved him a failure because he couldn't stop these three guys in the opening round. He did just fine against each of them. And also, to those who felt Vazquez or Mathebula won more than 4 close rounds of their own against Donaire.

Paul Williams vs. Sergio Martinez I - To think that some people out there anoint this fight with "robbery" off the top of their head shows true failure on their parts. Once again, anyone who doesn't have this fight by 1 point to either fighter likely failed with hypocrisy if they gave their scoring criteria and broke down the fight move by move and punch by punch.

I'm even reading people re-spewing the revisionist history on this particular thread.

I think in many cases, they aren't trolling, they simply have not watched the fight.

Ali-Cooper 1: While Ali certainly did get hit flush and hit the mat pretty hard in the first fight, he got up at the count of three and had the wherewithal to make it back to his corner without wavering. And while there was a delay, it was hardly the minute long period that Ali detractors make it out to be. It was a period of ten seconds (at most) before they were called out to the fifth. At that point, Ali landed a stiff right hand that caused Cooper to hold on, and things proceeded from there.

I agree with most of this, actually.

    This is ridiculous.

Foreman MIGHT have one a single round. It was an utter destruction.

Defensively revolutionary or not, that doesn't change what is happening before your eyes.

    An accurate detailing but....

Everybody gives Zab more than his dues for the fight against Floyd. Probably an overrated performance by now with how often the "should have been KD" gets mentioned. Remember, this fight is what had people claiming he couldn't beat a quality southpaw anymore for years and was a primary reason why everyone was on the "Floyd will never face Victor Ortiz!" bandwagon for those two weeks until Floyd signed to fight him.

Word for word, agree with all of this.

The perception people thought Lacy had and also I will add that when other overrated fighters lose and get further exposed, the win deflates in value. Yet British posters seem to think it is the opposite when it comes to Calzaghe/Lacy, for some exceptional reason.

I agree with Mayweather/Cotto too. Just because the body language and punch output were good for Cotto compared to usual Floyd opponents doesn't mean he didn't lose 8 clear rounds.

Morales has a huge cult following. So this was to be expected when he made the fight with Maidana close. I agree that the first Garcia fight wasn't that close, but I don't think many really feel it was. They say Garcia struggled which, I guess if you expect dominant stoppages every fight out, then maybe he did. To be honest I don't think Morales took much more of a physical beating than Garcia did that night, unlike the Maidana fight where clearly Morales was in much worse shape later that night than Maidana, I'm sure.

A couple of details on fights:

Evander Holyfield-Ray Mercer: Mercer suffered a broken rib, and Jim Lampley said that Mercer was dropped from a body shot, so that's probably why people mistakenly believe a body shot caused the knockdown. It was actually a left hook to the head that hurt Mercer and sent him reeling back, and he took a knee to avoid the follow up punches. Granite-chinned Mercer was genuinely hurt from a shot to the chin.

Marvin Hagler-Thomas Hearns: Hearns is often criticized for going to war with Hagler instead of boxing him. Hearns did say he was going to trade with Hagler and try to knock him out, and he seemed like he was trying to early on. But it didn't look like he had much of a choice. As he said later, he had to get respect or get run over. Hearns did try to box Hagler in the middle of the 1st round. He started moving circularly and landed a couple of straight rights, and looping right hands around Hagler's guard. But Hagler got to him and cornered him on the ropes, and hurt Hearns at the end of the round. Hearns tried for the rest of the fight to box and move, but Hagler kept getting to him. His legs weren't the same after the 1st round (or after his leg massage according to Manny Steward). Hagler had a perfect game plan and turned into a bull.

I also disagree when people say Hagler took Hearns's best shots. He took good shots especially the short right hand and then the looping overhand right that stunned Hagler early on. But Hearns's best punch was a straight right at distance, with full leverage, which knocked Duran, Cuevas, and Shuler silly. The rights that Hearns landed at that distance were looping right hands around the guard, and I think a couple of straight rights that Hagler saw coming.

My guess is that Hagler would have been able to take them and stay on his feet anyway.

Hearns was all over the place in the 13th, though. And he would have gone down in the 14th had he not stumbled back into the ropes. Maybe it wasn't the most appropriate second to stop it, but there were still just cause to do so given the fact that he'd been hurt on several occasions prior to that point.

Chris John- Juan Manuel Marquez, claiming it was a robbery makes me think most people didn't watch it. John won about as clearly as Bradley did against Marquez.

However a lot of people also claim that Marquez just wiped his ass with Pac and before brutally KOing. Wrong. If anything that fight took as much out of Marquez as it did Pacquiao.

    Agree completely.

Agree with the first part, even though I don't think many claim that, and I disagree with the second part even though it was obviously a war that took weeks off of both their lives.

Tucker-Douglas : Revisionist history has Douglas dominating and then inexplicably quitting. The fight was very even going into the later rounds, with Tucker coming on strong. Douglas got rocked in the 10th, and didn't throw anything back in response to Tucker's follow-up flurry, leading to the stoppage.

He didn't exactly go out on his shield, but there have been far worse tank jobs, and even if the fight had continued the momentum was with Tucker with 5 full rounds to go.
