There was a fight in Madison Square Garden in 1980's where a guy named Chris Reid almost got decapitated repeatedly, ref kept letting it go, an din one round, Reid was down 3 times, but ref did not call one, and at end, he was going down for what would have been 4th time in round. He also was down in first 2 times. It was agianst Fllgenico Obelmejias. By time they stopped it, when his manger jumped in as he was getting hammered and about to go down in 10th, it was too late. He was never same after. He went from contender to a guy who was shot. He got title shot anyway, lost retired. To make it worse, poor guy got cancer in his 30's. I saw some beatings, that one was worst.

Runner up was bigger bout, Monzon vs Licata. By time they stopped it Licata had been hammered to point of losing his I.Q. I looked him up recently on internet, he died young too. Weird coincidence.
