Manila in 1975, watched it with my dad, but being a Karate kid at the time , I didn't care for it, I fell in love with the sport watching Leonard vs Benitez in 79". That's the fight I started to appreciate the artistry behind the brutality.
Muhammad Ali vs Chuck Wepner Never forget the crack that straight right made that put down Wepner in the 15th.
Foreman vs. Norton, 1974 I was so impressed with George, that he became my all-time favorite. I also became a big Norton fan, and feel he was robbed of his legacy; he is the man who conquered Ali, but got only partial credit.
My dad has always been a boxing fan and I was born in the late 70s, so I'm sure I saw plenty of matches I don't remember. The first I remember clearly was Hagler Hearns. Next I clearly remember was Hagler Mugabi.
The Leonard-Hearns fight was the first Superfight I watched. Back then there was two cable companies On TV and Select TV Those were the begginings in the US of subscription pay TV.
The first fight @Richard M Murrieta saw was James Figg. They were classmates coming up. (Couldn’t resist.) My first memory of watching a fight was with my dad. I know it was during the summer because we were in Pensacola, Florida, visiting my grandma and that’s when we went down that way. It was, to the best of my memory, two white heavyweights and it ended either on a cut or a foul. I was young so this would have been maybe late 1960s or maybe early ‘70s on a weekend afternoon. I remember my father pleading for the ref to let it go on because we had been looking forward to it all day. I know it was in color. My best guess is that it was Jerry Quarry or George Chuvalo or maybe Chuck Wepner involved. It’s vaguely possible it was Duane Bobick but I don’t think he would have been on TV early enough (definitely a pro fight). Of course it could have been someone less prominent and lost to time. (For that matter while I’m fairly certain it was a DQ or a cut, it could have just been a stoppage my father thought was premature.) Mainly the memory is of it being something to anticipate and share with my Pop. I remember him going to see the closed circuit of FOTC and telling me all about it when he got home. I probably saw some fights on TV before the one above but I don’t recall any earlier memory.
A bunch from the late 80s but the first one I remember that I knew the fighters was Chavez vs Camacho
For me it was Muhammad Ali vs Floyd Patterson on Nov 22 1965 with my Dad and Uncle. We saw it live on Closed Circuit Television at the local high school.
I was only a young lad but it was Ali Spinks 2.And even tho it was Alis last win, even then I knew how special he'd been.
