Rose takes the number 1 spot by a long way in my estimation...Sands was cut down in his prime and was among the best 5 fighters in the world during one of the strongest eras in middleweight history but Lionel has him in every department for mine. Better top shelf wins, better fighter and the better career.
Newsreels mate. I have not heard of too much available at all. Mostly action grabs from fights he had.. Not sure how much extended footage is around.. Will take a look to see what is about. Michael J. Clarke has a radio interview of Sands in his possession, yet like all the old time collectors, this has become a 'personal' possession and something that has to be paid for in order to hear it...... pretty much the sort of thing Ty would do.
I rank Sands above all other Aussies (regardless of race) coz he would have had a fair chance of defeating Ray Robinson but was never going to get the shot. He beat Olson twice, the second time in Chicago (Bobo's adopted hometown) on the first fight shown live US west-east coast . A few months later Olson gets a title shot at Ray. Also Sands beat Villemain (who beat La Motta), ko'd Brimm twice (Brimm drew with SRR) among others.
Now imagine these bouts... Richards vs LaMotta. Sands vs Monzon. Mundine vs SRR Mundine vs LaMotta Sands vs LaMotta Richards vs SRR Richards vs Monzon. I think our boys stack up pretty bloody well.
Oh yeah. And bantams Carruthers v Olivares Rose v Zarate Ferreri v Gaby Canizales/Pintor Bennett v Orlando Canizales/Pintor Rose v Gomez at 122 Fenech v Pacman at 122 Mouth Watering
I like Bennett against Olivares and Zarate for sure... Two dynamite bangers that brought the fight to you.. Perfect for Elley who packed more dynamite. Carruthers' size and southpaw stance might trouble Olivares.. I'd like to see Carruthers and Takeo Sakurai.. Both Southies.. Both banged well enough. I honestly dont fancy Fenech against any legit Bantam. The OLDEST possible version of Zarate was getting on top of Fenech before the 'out of harms way' cut closed the bout. Ferreri vs Carruthers.
