He's definitely fast, but not on the level of someone like Jones or Taylor at their best. At the lower weights he was certainly quicker; I always remember nodding in appreciation when I see his lightning left-hooks against Corrales. One minute he's backing away -- the next second Corrales is on the floor looking bewildered. That left-hook was lovely. His straight right was also special (and it still is his most impressive punch, to be fair). I thought Judah was a little faster than him, though, and there are other currently active fighters that are, too. Khan, for example, is obviously nowhere near Mayweather's level as a fighter, but I think, in speed ALONE, he's actually faster. Watch, for example, his fight with Gomez, where (in round 4) he literally throws a 15 or 16 punch combination and hammers him all the way across the ring and into the ropes in the space of a few seconds.
I think this is one of those semantic arguments that has to do with how you define hand speed. There is hand speed that manifests itself in blazing fast flurries--Like Camacho, Sugar Ray Leonard, Ali, etc. Often these are flashy and fun to watch. They score points but not necessarily KDs. Then there is what I call "attack speed." That's the ability to get inside a fighters defense and deliver a blow before he can react. That's the sort of "blazing hand speed" that I would say Pac has. Think JMM 1, first round as an example. Very few boxers can penetrate their opponents defense with a powerful, straight shot like Pac. Blazing handspeed. Pac? Absolutely.
I don't see you specifying "combinations" here. If anything, I was helping you clarify yourself. And in any case, how many punches you throw in combo is a matter of style as much as it is a matter of ability. And to answer your question again, Marquez, Barrera, Lucero... Seriously, video evidence? :yep
it's the truth....hopkins is getting praised after beating pavlik, a man that was near death like 2 days before the fight... hopkins is a dirty fighter with veteran moves that he gets away with...a prime santos is way more skilled, **** i bet you santos even beats him at 160
Man, Pavlik's condition pre-Hopkins sure has deteriorated recently. I'm expecting to hear that he ended a round of chemo the day of the weigh in any second now.
Also when he had Ricky Hatton hurt 2 or 3 rounds before the actual stoppage he threw some ridiculosly fast combinations.
He doesnt have blazing speed, but he also doesnt throw every shot with the same speed or power, he switches up which is one of the reasons he is so hard to time.
does this even need to be debated? i think it was barrera or marquez who said that's it's not really pac's punching power that makes him a puzzle but his speed. jmm had to adjust to his speed in their series, but still was'nt able to counter every charge. those punches are'nt shoe shine shots either, but have good leverage behind them.
