Margarito never established himself as being anything at 154. He'd only ever beaten guys like Brantley and Garcia at 154. He'd lost years earlier at the weight to Santos in their re-match.

That might be true. Just as Cotto really hasn't done anything at 154 either. He's ranked up at 154 due to who he is, and his career resume.

 

It goes both ways.

On principle, both Pacquiao fans and Mayweather fans will likely be contradicting themselves over the whole "leftover" argument. Odds are that you have too, Lance. Either Hatton was better for Floyd and Cotto was worse for Floyd, or Hatton was better for Pac and Cotto was worse for Pac.

To me, it's a case by case basis while maintaining double-standard-free, but apparently people on ESB don't feel that way.

I think the Mosley fight is the only one that is non-contradicting because it was the exact same weight. It is clear that Mayweather fought the better version, that isn't up for debate.

 

Based on multiple threads and polls since the Margarito re-match, Cotto is the MASS CONSENSUS #1 at junior middleweight.

I myself don't think he is #1 at 154, along with what you said, but it seemed unanimous that people consider him so. I respect that.

The difference here is that Floyd fans will say Cotto is a renewed fighter now that Floyd is fighting him (not the case had there been Pac-Cotto II), but Margarito remains a shot fighter in their eyes.

 

Not "EXACTLY":

-It was half of a weight class difference, not a full one.

-Margarito had a relationship with respected trainer Javier Capatillo (who cares how to spell it). He was in his first or second fight with Garcia when he fought Pac.

-Mental state, maybe. However, he was the favorite against Mosley, and the big underdog against Pac. Plus, mentally speaking, the Mosley beating would take a toll on Margarito in addition to his mental pondering if he will be able to be the same without loads.
