This is a bit harsh, in my humble opinion. Joes record is respectable. But based on his record, if he did not retire undefeated, nobody would have the termerity to even suggest that he is an all time great. His record is no better than a number of other fighters very good fighters like Johnson or Tarver...the only difference is they have a couple of loses on their records. And his record isn't even in the same universe as all time greats like Hopkins or Jones.

Pretty good comparison....... although, I will say the comparison is there as well in the fact that both seemed willing to fight top guys when they were on the rise and before they really settled in with their precious "O"s.

How many fights did Joe Calzaghe avoid where the opponent was demanded by a consensus? How many fights did Calzaghe avoid which were demanded by the entire boxing public? He cleaned out his division, just like B-hop and Kostya Tszyu...

did Floyd do that at 147? no, that wasn't his original weight class, but one can argue that this is his natural weight class...he seems to be comfortable fighting at 147 in his prime and is incapable of making a lower weight at this time.[/quote]

Horrible post. First off, Joe didn't clean out the division. He beat the guys he was expected to beat...period. Did you know, for instance that the only time he wasn't favored in a fight was against Lacey? That's once in what 46 fights! And the only reason he wasn't favored against Lacey is because he had been injured for so long and Lacey was overrated. Sorry, buy Joe is the very definition of a safety first fighter. He was good...very good, in fact. But still very far from an all-time great.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but calzaghe has had a better career than floyd having ducked no 1 and fought away from his own country, unlike floyd.
Is there really any need to carry on, lol?

What a poor, poor comparison. Calzaghe's soft record and fighting two legends way past their prime is nothing to compare to Floyd Mayweather.

So Corrales, Judah, De La Hoya (at 154), Hatton, Corley(1st fight at 140), Castillo, Chavez are not considered serious challenges?

Also to mention he called out Mosley twice and wanted to fight Cotto(who was too 'green' at the time). If Mayweather beats Pac and then Mosley, people will still tarnish his legacy by saying "he avoided margarito/williams/cotto".

Sometimes it seems Mayweather has to be the only boxer to beat EVERYONE out there to get respect.

That's probbaly because you're not thinking. Joe's win against Lacey is the single most overrated win in British boxing history. And the only reason Joe agreed to it was because Lacey offered to come to him and Showtime, the only network who was showing his fights, demanded the fight. That is a fact.

Good for you for speaking up you are a well respected poster on here and you speak the truth!

I agree Joe wanted to protect his "oh" in the latter stages of his career but in 2001/02 he wanted the big fights regardless of the risk and was avoided to **** because he brought high risk low reward!

You think beating a hype job like Lacy, Kessler, getting a SD over a 43 year old B-hop and beating a shot-to-shot Jones is better than beatting Corrales, Castillo, Hatton, De La Hoya, Marquez and Judah....

    How exactly? :think

Then it was up to him to take the pay cut and have the confidence in himself to trust that it would lead to bigger things. Please don't start with this revisionist history BS. The fact is that Joe was content to sit on his throne in Wales until the perfect opportunity came along, i.e, a shot against an overhyped, overrated American contender (Lacey) who agreed to fight Joe in the UK. Sorry, but this is indisputable. :hi:

I'm almost positive that this thread will degenerate into a Calzaghe vs Mayweather hate-O-matic..... so I'll get this out of the way now........

    Floyd Mayweather's resume TKO9 Joe Calzaghe's resume.
