Gerena from 1999 never gets mentioned as one of Floyd's funnest early fights. He threw combinations, and punched with snap, with his whole body, and with bad intentions in that fight. That and Jesus Chavez are the two Floyd fights I watched most just after they happened.

I actually thought Mayweather stunned Berto pretty badly for a moment with an uppercut, but chose not to follow up.

Floyd looked decent enough for a 38 year old fighter who seems kind of bored of it all. At points, he even strung together three and four punch combinations, which was a bit more than I was expecting to see.

It was telling when Jim Gray asked "have you just lost the passion for this" and Mayweather hesitated for a very pregnant, water-ready-to-break pause, barely concealing a smirk. That was essentially a "yes".

Considering that, for him to have mustered up enough dedication to put in the requisite effort through one last training camp to be able to go virtually untouched all night by someone like Berto (even with the stylistic disadvantages the Haitian faced he is still a fringe world class operator with speed & pop reasonably close to his prime who came in extremely fit and gradually cranked up his determination to secure victory in the last two-thirds of the fight) bespeaks what a specimen of both athletic talent and paragon of hard work he remains well beyond the point where most have begun to dial in their performances.

I think the WW titles will change hands frequently when Floyd and Pac are gone.

This was the only post I needed to read to gauge exactly how the fight must have went down. Thanks, IB!

Drew's right, though, in that Mayweather did crank in a few hard uppercuts on Berto in the championship frames. It wasn't quite Tito vs. DLH territory. He was coasting for the most part but wasn't completely on his bike.

(of course, he didn't really need to be, as Berto is no Tito!)
