His father all but banned his leaping left hook he did often vs oscar and vs chico among vs others ..... I just think that pull counter at age 37 is asking for trouble you can see him setting up for it a mile away he let's you jab and he tries to get the timing and throws it some say "oh Floyd doesn't throw combos" blah blah blah that's not the flaw it's the pull counter
It gives you opportunities to exploit it IF you work on it hard enough in the gym. Unfortunately, Maidana just wanted to be the agressor, no real intelligence was shown by him.
But not too many boxers pick up on it. True, the opportunity is there for him to get countered but how many times have you seen that happen to him? I can't recall any, actually, besides last night's fight. I think that is why he uses it with much success.
The pull counter he does, is used more as a crowd pleaser than as an effective means to set something else to follow. He uses it also to embarrass the other fighter, it's a very flashy move and it frustrates his opponent. I view it as a 360 windmill dunk as a opposed to a basic one hand slam. They both net you 2 points, but one males the crowd ohh and ahh.

It's worked thus far but you are right.....it's dangerous and Marcos was trying to counter with his own right after the jab but Floyd was too quick...if you noticed....Marcos began doubling his jab and that countered Floyd's pull counter right on a few occasions. If Marcos had more speed he would have been successful landing his own counter right after Floyd would try to get his pull counter right off.
You can't blame him for it, it's a tactic that usually only works once or twice a fight and it's usually very effective. He's knocked out several guys in the lighter weight classes with this, (Biggest example would be N'Dou). That pull counter is devastating. It's definitely not something that he should use over and over again, but when he does, it usually works beautifully.
I'm starting to agree. His pull counter used to be unstoppable, but we've recently seen Cotto counter it with a left hook. Maidana was able to counter it with a left hook also in May and counter it with a right hand in both fights.
You won't counter Floyd more than he counter him.. He will make you more hesitant to throw a weak jab than you making him not want to do it.. I think his straight right is his best punch and he gets it out faster than a left hook.. He throws the right directly over our just behind your jab, so you can't defend.. It looks like he miss his opportunity and leaves himself open, but it won't happen too often...
I agree but fact is his pull counter isn't hurting anyone at this weight and it puts him at higher risk why not just use a left hook? You can see his setup for that punch a mile away
It scores him points and its a clean flush punch.. His opponent might be bigger, but they are also slower.. They have a better opportunity to defend against or even counter a left hook than a perfectly timed quick straight right.. He doesn't use it to hurt you as much as he used to, but they will feel it and won't want to make that mistake again.. One less pinch Floyd wouldn't have to worry about...
