A couple of weeks back I caught a replay of Zab's 1995 NY Golden Gloves Final match against (I dont remember his Name). The first two rounds Zab looked great, he even scored a spectacular knockdown, with a left uppercut-right cross combo towards the end of round 2, it was a thing of beauty. He started the third round, dominating the action, trying to finish the fight, and then something happened. About half way through the last round, he started looking up at the clock, he lost focus, and started to get caught with flush shots to the face. The fight ended with Zab looking up at the clock, and the other guy coming forward, throwing punches. I remember, back at that time, I was just starting my amateur career, Zab Judah was the man in NY amateur boxing. Watching that fight, something ocurred to me-Zab is the same now as he was back as an amateur, he always lost focus at some point during a fight.
yup bad stamina will do that too ya .. sound like he was biding his time till the fight was over and he was too tired to move out of the way of the punches. Zab reminds me of a fighter who has a **** load of talent but never learned how to really fight .
The dilution of skill, there has been a significant drop in the skill level of fighters over the last 3 decades, less participation in the sport, less sparring partners. The lost art of boxing and how to box. The great teachers Clancy, Cus Damato, and others have passed away. Fighters no longer throw combos they throw flurries they no longer throw punches they pot shot. Pro boxing resembles 12 round amatuer fights, Ive said it before its morse code tap tap tap.....repeat steal round. Its hell to judge a fight these days where taps and slaps count as much as a good smash to the face.....flail away at your opponents gloves a few times a round and you win fights. The young guys today will say thats the science of boxing and judgeing is ****ed, Back when Duran and Leanord fought everyone knew how to score a round and what effective aggression was. Today guys are just not throwing punches or not taking chances THEY THROW 2 OR 3 PUNCHES A ROUND GO INTO A SHELL AND THIS IS CALLED DEFENSE.
That's obvious . . . Zab himself has no confidence in his stamina. He is a very good competitive fighter only up to 6th round as he has shown in his latest fights . . . and he knew that. If he starts throwing combos early he might not last until 6th.
