thanks for the discussion - i appreciate what you mean about amateur pedigree.

basically, my fantasy (im 20) is to take up boxing, maybe have a fair few amateur fights to prove to myself im as good as i think i can be - then embark on a pro mission to go down as greatest of all time - no arguments. then it lead me to think - how would i do that, what would i have to do? so i thought i'd speak to you.

regards to jc - my personal feeling is p4p means best fighter in the world regardless of weight - not resume. which is why i actually have jc - based on the principle if all fighters could fight each other where weight is not an issue - right now jc is p4p 1. however acheivements wise pbf beats calz.

but anyway, say you had a fighter that didnt care about the money, or the fame etc. - had the skills to do it, was fighting for legacy, and legacy alone.

    what would he do.

my personal feeling (again its me in the fantasy but you get my point) is - 100:0 undisputed in 3 or more divisions, beating (realistically) everyone he can - obviously you cant fight everyone, but every live challenger and guy that "could" be a threat - beat them.

am i setting the bar too high? too low? would 50:0 be enough with a similar achievement / resume. remember i want to be someone who IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME, not ONE OF. (although everyone has an opinion etc. - this is to be someone who has done something special, greater than that .1% - this is the GOAT.

    (apologies for double post)

maybe being undefeated isnt important? maybe bouncing back from a loss to continuously be dominant. as i said, im trying to create the fighter that has no equal, that (obviously one shot can change everything, but like people often assume rjj in his prime would be hard to catch - so is this guy), would come on top in every era.

also - kg, thanks for saying interesting question... half expected to get flamed for stupid posts etc. :)

What I highlighed in red is precisely why I think you have to look at more than just "who can beat who" when deciding P4P lists. You just pointed out that to be recognized as the GOAT, you would have to beat alot of good and great fighters, which proves in the ring that you are as good as you look. That's why resume matters. Any fighters fan can rationalize a way to say that his fighter (if he is a good fighter) LOOKS like he could beat any fighter regardless of weight.

What you laid out would put someone as the best ever....100-0 or even 50-0 while being undisputed Lineal champion would certainly put you in the discussion. But it would matter what weight divisions and who were the champions you defeated to become champion. Again, resume starts to come into play there no matter how good you LOOK.

    what would you recommend then?

my personal feelings are, it needs to be middle area - welterweight - light heavyweight, in between that area - maybe (unlikely - jones did it though), a title at heavy?

lets look at todays era - or the era of the last few years - 04/05 onwards - 2015 or so, if a fighter had started his career at that time, what should he have been doing to make a legacy etc.

That is the best weight class. 147 up will put you in at least 2 of the most storied divisions which in general have great fighters.
