That's kind of who I'm addressing, those people.
And here, you are echoing my sentiments exactly. Every style hasn't its technical weakness, and some fighters have more than others, but it doesn't mean they are worse boxers. That's been my point this entire thread. Carnera and Vitali might not look like technical wizards, but they are still good boxers. Bad production just amplified this conception further.

Also, if you guys aren't aware, there is a huge segment of the boxing community that considers most old school fighters inferior technically and ability wise.

This seemed obvious to me, because I'm around other communities besides this one, and hear many more opinions from many more people. And I kind of figured everyone else did too. But perhaps it's not as obvious as I thought.

Also, when I hear some people criticize fighters like Carnera on this forum for his technique, it sounds like they think he isn't a good boxer, period. Not that he is unorthodox or has some technical flaws.

Okay, same for Dempsey and Primo.
Not sure why this is hard to understand.

During the time I've been here I've only seen these guys be revered. But that's here in Classic, General might be different, I don't know.

This subforum is more forgiving to legends than other communities.
Also, there is a large section of fans who respect old timers, but don't feel that they are competitive with modern counterparts.

There is a large selection of boxing enthusiasts that make their mind up on the evidence their eyes present them with, not on the date on the film.

I think Pele was a fantastically skilled footballer that could do things I can only dream of. Would he be among the top 10 best today if you transported him from the early/mid 60's to the present time? Probably not.

I see boxing much in the same light (but only guesses of course), but that doesn't make me respect and appreciate the past greats any less.

And the clarity of evidence matters.

It helps, but is it your contention then that the 1930's films are so blurred and out of synch that it is impossible to form an accurate appraisal of the abilities of those fighters that plied their trade in that decade?
