Have to say this for the Brits, they really do support their guys in whatever they do. Even Steve Gee had crowd support.

Smart business move if enough Mexicans forgive him for being a chicken, and assuming he would have lost the fight in brutal fashion if he had the cojones to fight his mando.
That last part I'm quite sure of, the question is about the first part.

This thread is about "smart business move" and I don't see how it's a smart business move not fighting Golovkin if Canelo and GBP honestly believed he would win.

Just not seeing it, Canelo is fighting Liam Smith on Boxnation while if Jr Vs Golovkin happens (and it's looking very likely now) then it's a big PPV event on Sky Sports in front of a monster crowd with huge UK exposure.

Now, if Canelo honestly believed he beat Golovkin then he should have gone and beat the snot out of him, laughed in his face, laughed in the face of the doubters, become the genuine P4P number 1 and then he could have come here and fought Jr on a huge PPV event in front of a monster crowd, got massive UK and European exposure and cemented himself in boxing fans minds as a fearless, truly great fighter and we are talking worldwide superstar.

Instead of being thought off as a gutless ducking coward like he is now.

Liam Smith on Boxnation , nope not having it, not fighting Golovkin was a duck, it was a massive miscalculation and anybody trying to spin it any other way is not be honest with themselves.

if lil g thought he could beat ward he would have fought him too!

if lil g and and k2 thought he would win it would be smart business to defeat the 168 kingpin, fellow p4p entrant, and unbeaten former Olympic gold medalist

seems good enough for hbo and kovalev doesn't it?

fighting dom wade instead looks like a duck to me!

For the most part it has been everyone else, for the longest time Alvarez did in fact say if GGG wants to fight at 154/55 they can fight next, if he wants it at 160 gotta wait til he moves up.
People just ignored it and came up with the idea that he's 190 fighting small guys etc...
I feel them not fighting next or at least this year is a disservice for the fans, at the same time its no different than GGG backtracking on the 54-68 stuff as soon as he started getting called out.
Most will bring up the title then at the same time will bash Alvarez fighting a champ in his actual division saying titles don't matter.

The business excuse is bs for all fans but if your gonna bash it bash everyone and not just guys you don't like. I have no problem criticizing Alvarez even as a fan but the vast majority of Golovkin supporters seem incapable of being remotely impartial when he's done and does the same exact sh!t.

Did Golovkin hold the WBC SMW title? Canelo was fighting in the same weigh division as Golvokin.

There are some huge differences and you know it.

Cool, I see your view. I just hope for Canelo's sake he can make 154 without killing himself. If he misses weight he is going to end up looking very foolish indeed.

The difference between GGG and Canelo is that Golovkin is clearly a natural MW willing to fight above his weight class. I don't think he can make 154, whatever he said a few years ago.

Canelo is a 160 guy draining himself to death to make a lighter weight, and it's painfully obvious that he's doing it to avoid Golovkin. I think he wants to wait for GGG to get old and then challenge. Good plan, except for he's done himself huge PR damage and may be doing his body damage too with the absurd weight cuts.

Some of the "fans" on this site are unreal...your obsession with who "ducked" who has gotten so out of hand that now you're accusing Sergio Martinez of ducking Triple G? I can remember only a few years back when these very same people on this site were singing ***y Sergio's praises for taking on all comers and being afraid of no one. Now that he is well into retirement and makes an off the cuff comment about Canelo making a smart business decision (not endorsing his behavior, but merely commenting on it), it's only because he himself was also a ducker? What brilliant logic (that's sarcasm, in case you haven't picked up on it).

The fact of the matter is that Sergio took on Paul Williams when NO ONE else wanted to even consider it due to his height, length, athleticism and work rate. Not only did he come back after losing to him and fight a rematch, but he knocked him out in a candidate for KO of the year. Before the rematch, he dismantled Kelly Pavlik who was still a very live threat to the entire middleweight division at that point. He then took on two undefeated, highly-touted European contenders in a row (Serhiy Dzinziruk and Matthew Macklin) before fighting another guy that no one wanted to fight - Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. Chavez was known as a guy that would balloon up overnight and come in 10-15 pounds heavier than every opponent he ever faced, including Martinez. After taking care of business there, he took on another undefeated prospect in Martin Murray before his heroic effort against Cotto on a bad knee.

Who was GGG at this point? While GGG is one of the hottest names in the business at the moment, he was still relatively unknown or, at the very least, looked at as just another contender like a Serhiy Dzinziruk or a Martin Murray at that point in Sergio's career. Had he been a credible threat, and had the fans heavily demanded such as fight the way they are now demanding that Canelo and GGG fight each other, then I could see the heat that Sergio is getting on this board. The fact of the matter is, however, that there was no public outcry for this fight to happen and Sergio chose instead to fight other legitimate threats to his title.

Don't be so quick to **** all over the same fighters you used to praise. Grow up and take of the blinders, folks...remembering that some of these guys step into the ring and are carried out on stretchers before you are so quick to call them cowards.

I respect anyone's opinion willing to debate rationally and leave all the troll stuff out I kind of disagree though.
If Alvarez was struggling to make weight you would think it would show in his performances, hes yet to look like a drained fighter.
I think the weight thing has more to do with options realistically its one maybe two worth while fights at 160 for Alvarez that's GGG and Saunders/Jacobs everything else is really no better than the Smith fight, 147-54 range has more talent although I think officially this is the last year we'll see Alvarez at 154.

I mean look at the top 5 at 54 & 60 outside of Lara all come in the same size as Alvarez are they all ducking MW? Also how do you feel GGG is more willing to move up?

Alvarez has looked pretty drained in the last weigh ins. But you are correct, performance wise he's been OK. I guess we'll see.

Golovkin is clearly more willing to fight at a higher weight. He's actually signed for fights at 168 (Chavez) and made serious offers to others (Froch). I think we might well see him against Zurdo or De Gale, which would be excellent fights for the future.

But he dug his heels in against Canelo's 155 demand, and frankly I think that if Golovkin could have made 155 without losing something he would have done so. Would have been a good fight and a great payday.
