This is just not true. His opponents median weight was 198, dunno about the avarage. Tysons median opponent was TWENTY pounds heavier than Listons! Thats a weight class for sure. Bowe even 9 pounds more and Wladimir fought 233lb men!

Considering the own fighters weight, all of these fighters had some weight advantage excluding Mike Tyson. Wlad and Bowe were some pounds in advantage, Liston was some XY pound in advantage.

    It's a prestigious list:

    Sam Langford
    Roberto Duran
    Bob Fitzsimmons
    Muhammad Ali

    All on it.

If you hold him in as high regard as these guys, you are overrating him.

Without being allowed to endlessly clinch Waldo doesn't see past the 3rd. He likely runs out the ring when Tyson enters

Anyone one of them could. I think Bowe would have the least chance, but I do like how he matches up with Tyson.

I rate Sonny as high as you do at heavyweight. I think you rate him at #15 don’t you?

Pretty sure McG has him in his top 10... Not that I'm a fan boy of his work or anything.

Almost anything can happen in a tournament like this.

The man who wins it won't necessarily be the best man in it.

Luck can play a role as well.

there has been so many ATG's who have quit .. The problem is that they are for the most part given a pass compared to Liston, that's why you really never here of it, except for Duran because he is discussed here so much .. But when you start bashing a 35 year old fighter for this and this is his biggest knock .. Tells you how great he was ..imo

I think the last time I did a list I had him at #9 or #10. Hard to remember though. I don't think i'll ever do a new one tbh.

If you're assuming best for best you have a not bad night on which to judge him. A good place to start is maybe Liston, he's pretty much comparable to Holyfield in terms of size. How do you think he compares with Holyfield?

Where I struggle with Bowe is consistency, if you're not assuming best for best in every fight...that's then a nightmare because this guy genuinely did have an issue with consistency.

The size comparison is okay. Liston was better at the giving, Holyfield was better at the taking. Despite other differences, this one is still not easy to call.

I believe in a boxing sense Sonny was a much stronger man than Evander Holyfeild. Height wise they are similar because having seen him I seriously contest that Evander was ever much, if anything, more than a six footer. The body building Evander did to bulk up from Ezzard Charles size was totally artificial. I think For Bowe, Sonny would be a much tougher proposition than Evander ever was. If Sonny ever had Bowe decked and out on his feet like Evander did there would be no way Riddick survives being counted out and stretchered off.

No you are wrong. The consensus is Liston was better than Charles at heavyweight

Here is the IBRO list 2005. Voted on by an entire panel of boxing experts and historians

    1. Joe Louis
    2. Muhammad Ali
    3. Jack Johnson
    4. Jack Dempsey
    5. Rocky Marciano
    6. Larry Holmes
    7. James J. Jeffries
    8. George Foreman
    9. Sonny Liston
    10. Joe Frazier
    11. Gene Tunney
    12. Lennox Lewis
    13. Mike Tyson
    14. Evander Holyfield
    15. Sam Langford
    16. Jersey Joe Walcott
    17. Ezzard Charles
    18. Harry Wills

Liston well ahead of Charles, as expected
