Frampton and Avalos apparently drew almost 2 million viewers. Is that a good or bad result for boxing? Bare in mind, Amir Khan used to pull much bigger numbers. He got 7 million for his fight v. Graham Earl, and his next fight, against Gairy St. Clair drew 5 million going head to head with Match Of The Day.
A relatively unknown Irish man who weighs 8 stone, had nowhere NEAR the profile and buzz around him that Khan had and it's his first fight on the channel AND it was against MOTD? Not bad I say.
You will know more than me man, but how many fights had Khan had on terrestrial before those? You had the hoopla with Khan from the Olympics too, plus he is English so a bit further down the road as far as profile goes. Frampton going in from a standing start, so 2million was pretty decent. If stays on ITV, think would be fairer to judge viewing figures in 2 or 3 fights time when the armchair sports fan becomes a little more aquatinted. And also when the fight doesn't start at 11pm!
Not the best but various factors, the start time being one and the fact it was competing with Match of the day for casual fans
I think Khan had all his fights on ITV up until that point. Another point to bare in mind, that while times have changed and people won't watch live on TV anymore, Barry McGuigan who was Northern Irish did 20 million viewers. I believe the number is lower than anticipated by looking around the web, but I do agree it's a good starting point for an Irish guy who's not a household name, although it will likely mean that if Quigg v Frampton fight this year- it's more likely to end up on Box Office than ITV.
Yeah I think it's a SBO job in fairness, although would do massive numbers on ITV if it is promoted to death. Can't see Eddie doing that given his ties with Sky.
i think the 2mil is a decent number, another thread said 75% of viewers were watching that fight in Northern Ireland. will hopefully encourage ITV to get back into boxing.
The 75% number is a good indicator that it went well, bear in mind for the last year or so he's been on boxnation which doesn't have the reach so in terms of mainland uk the numbers aren't likely to be massive as he isn't well known, not to mention the late start due to Jonathan Ross/take me out (but getting the undercard on itv4 was a good move)
If the ITV 1 show had started at 9, showed one undercard fight then Frampton I think it would have at least pulled in 3.5 million. I think it was stupid switching over to ITV1 so late then add in it was going against MOTD. If ITV get Frampton vs Quigg they can't do the same **** again.
