Agreed, Frankie is probably the best "pure" boxer we've seen since Calzaghe, he just needs to step up now and show that talent on a World stage. Frankie's still only 28 and been a Pro for 5 years now and may well fight for a World title within the next year when he'll still only be 29 which is still fairly young in boxing terms nowadays especially as Frankie has very little wear and tear on him. There could even be a possibility he gets to fight for a World title by the end of the year, if as expected Mayweather beats Maidana he'll become WBC/WBA Welterweight champion but he'll more then then likely just keep the WBC belt and drop the WBA one making it vacant. The WBA will then nominate their 2 highest ranked boxers to fight for the vacant WBA belt. The current Top 4 in the WBA are 1) Keith Thurman 2) Paulie Malignaggi 3) Luis Collazo 4) Frankie Gavin. Malignaggi is fighting for the IBF belt so win or lose he won't be eligible, if Collazo loses to Khan he will be out of the running too so that will leave Frankie Gavin vs Keith Thurman to contest the vacant WBA belt by the end of the year.
Really? Calzaghe was a 'pure boxer'. I'd go as far as saying Calzaghe techincally was about as bad a world champion as you'll see. Many other fantastic attributes no doubt, but for for me his techinique was abysmal
I never said anything about technical skills. "Pure" boxers to me are guys like Roy Jones who are great athletes despite their lack of technique, you could put them in with any style and they'd beat them on their athleticism alone. Gavin is someone i'd include as a "Pure" boxer as he has fantastic speed, timing, reflexes and great all round athletic ability although he has a hell of a lot to achieve yet to be mentioned in the same breath as Jones and Calzaghe.
Get outta here! Roid Jones was an utter fraud. He got by on the use of PEDS. Fact. When he got busted, he became average. Fact. He was also an utter coward who ducked almost a dozen opponents. Fact. I have just schooled you. Fact.
You've said that Gavin is highly rated but I honestly don't know how he's earned it,based on the fact that his best wins are over Vassell and Witter, who is not the fighter he was.Do you agree with me that a win over Bundu and the European title, plus another win over a decent American are the 2 wins you are talking about? If,say, his next 2 wins were over this African guy and possibly another British opponent would he have earned the right and be prepared to mix in company like Bradley or Thurman? I agree he isn't old,but he doesn't have plenty of time, either. Time waits for nobody,in boxing or out .
Sorry Terminator, just read your post again, and it seems you do think the Bundu fight is viable. Im not sure it happens, but think it should. Gavins best opponent and he should win. All Im saying is its time to grasp the nettle now and fight better men in preparation for a shot if it comes. If he's not been fighting at that level, which he hasn't so far, hell be found wanting for sure I reckon.
