hmm... let me see... a Frank Warren fighter, great amateur looking to build towards world level... i'll try and think of a similar time... another certain gifted amateur routinely fought smaller men out of their weight class on his way to the top... maybe people are just following that template
Arthur's been out for a while, he needs to come back and find his feet 1st. Both should go looking for John Murray if he doesn't give up the European. If he does then they should look to be in a position to pick it up.
think they both need to prove they have what it got at lightweight before fighting for the european!! rees beat some average fighters in prizefighter and arthur not looked good for years. rees woyuld have a chance against murray but arthur would get beat. not sure arthur has the heart for a hard fight
That's why I said Arthur needed to come back at a lower level first. I didn't say Rees should fight Murray next but Murray has to be their goal. Rees is a lot better opponent than Buckland and he gave Murray a decent fight. In a fight or 2 then Rees / Murray is a very good fight.
how low? he has stated he only interested in big fights of euro level and world level. he said he too good to bother with british and commonwealth titles!! so where does he prove himself to get these shots?
He's been out for a while so an 8 rounder against someone in the top 10 would be a fair matchup. He a can't go straight back into a 12 rounder. Well he shouldn't! He should shake off some rust and then if he wants Murray or vacant European title shot then he should go for it.
I'm sure the fight with Barry Morrison would't be too difficult to make. That would be either a good stepping stone fight or a career ending fight if taken lightly. Don't think either Tommy Gilmour or Barry Morrison would be shaking at the prospect :bbb
He's an ex World Military Champion, however don't know how much oposition would be involved in the winning of this title. Seen him box a few years ago in Glasgow smart stylist but agree - not a banger funtime should win handily:happy
Kelly also managed to make it to the last eight of the world championships in Belfast 2001, and Michael holds a couple of amateur wins over Paul McCloskey also. Although I'm hoping for a Kelly win here, I won't be expecting it, but I think Kelly might surprise a few here with his resistance.
Interesting fact about beating McCloskey. He must really have been a decent amateur then ?, any idea why he didn't progress in the paid ranks ? was it lack of ambition, punching power, promotion ? cos he appeared to have a good solid grounding and should maybe have done more simply based on his experience of the game. I would also like to see him win, however I think Frankie has too much for him at this time, but would expect Kelly to make it quite an uncomfortable evening . Let's hope Kelly fights with prde and gives everything - you never know stranger things have happened.
He should bring a good test with his amateur credentials but he can't be that good the way he was in his in last fight he Said it was an off dy but wat bout his draws
dont worry about your opponent frankie. if you box to your best you beat anyone in the UK a the moment
I really dont know what has been Kelly's problem, but there was a clip on youtube claiming it was personal and he didn't want to talk about it - obviously he stated that he didn't have as much preparation time for his last fight and he appears to think he has had a longer time to prepare for you. He also made it quite clear that his sparring is going well as he has been sparring McCloskey. I'd like to think he could give you a few rounds, however I've saw him some time ago and he didnt appear to be anything special - think he may be drinking at the last chance saloon - may the best man win
