Both fighters are known for toughness , pressure fighting ability and willingness to trade. Who would break? Got to be a 15 rounds!
We’ve never seen Riddick Bowe in a 15 round fight so there’s that to consider. Both men were inside fighters and had great inside fighting skillls, though very different in their own way. It’s reasonable to assume that the entire bout would be fought inside the pocket rendering Bowe’s height and reach less useful. But he’d also have about thirty pounds on Joe, an iron chin, two fisted attack and some power. At the end of the day I have no doubt that this would be a war with both men taking punishment. But part of me envision’s Frazier getting a bit too busted up in there and eventually stopped. Not a given of course.
Great post. Gruelling fight this one imo, unless we have Joe hurt early and we see Frazier lko2, but not sure Bowe Had that power. Frazier s relentless pressure, stamina and body attack could break through Riddick s weaker defensive habits. Frazier s left hook is not something you want to taking for 12-15 rounds . But yes, Joe would take his fair share of leather from the bigger man.
It would definitely be a boxing fan’s kinda fight. Interesting question - which one would have Eddie Futch in his corner ?
Bowe was never on Frazier's level conditioning wise, the round 10 with Holyfield they are both a bit gassed and do a lot of leaning on each other in the clinch despite the great exchanges, Frazier would take advantage of that lapse and turn up the smoke, Frazier had a lot more steam than Bowe even in Manila nevermind the FOTC form
IMHO this is the difference maker--ESPECIALLY the FOTC version of Frazier who had off the charts conditioning and stamina. Bowe would eventually crumble as Joe would grind him down with relentless pressure and aggression.
Apart from a prime Muhammad Ali,a fighter would need Foremanesque power to beat a peak Joe Frazier.Bowe was obviously a serious puncher but doesn't quite have Big George's nuclear punching power. I would vote for Smokin'Joe.One certainty is FOTC Frazier vs Bowe from the 1st Holyfield clash would have been an all-time classic fight.
These two are so interesting, they both looked awesome and they both had their primes beaten right out of them pretty quick, one physically, one mentally, they just weren't up to it over the long haul. These two could finish each other. Overall my guess prime-for-prime is that Bowe would need to KO Frazier to win and the question is whether or not Bowe hits hard enough to get that done with a shot and a half. My feeling is that in a best-for-best situation, Bowe might just be unable to get him out of there. But if he's just over the limit needed to finish Joe Frazier, he'd win. He would definitely land his Sunday best on occasion.
Bowe had "some power"? Bowe was pulverizing. Golota was bouncing punch-drunk Bowe (too many left-hooks from Holyfield) around and Bowe still broke his jaw.
Bowe had power but so did Quarry, Bonavena, Ellis. The Foreman fight was JF on the decline in his short career of prime JF. Frazier had the work rate and would be going to the body but not the low blows like Golota. Frazier from the FOTC or before could be hit but he had the stamina to bob and weave. I think Frazier's body work could wear Bowe down and hurt him late in the fight and get the stoppage or the UD. Bowe was durable but Frazier would work the body and hook to the head. Condition and Stamina would be key. Frazier tko 12-15 or UD 12 or 15
Bowe's hands were kinda quick the way he could put together combinations on the inside. Whatever problems Riddick had punching power was never one of them. His uppercut would be a problem for Joe. Frazier could do some damage with his own inside game but I see Riddick applying that 235lbs to force Joe back. I think its a matter of time before Bowe catches him with too many clean punches. Bowe by TKO 4 to 6 rounds.
Bowe went the distance twice with Holyfield.. gathered two DQ wins over Golota- other than that, didn't he KO everybody he fought, or damn near? In devastating fashion?
