Freddie roach: I want khan to punish brandon rios

Discussion in 'British Boxing Forum' started by stocks, Dec 8, 2011.

  1. I think Maidana still wins the fight, and would beat Ortiz again if a rematch were to happen.

For me, Ortiz lacks the mental capability to defeat top class fighters. Like you, I'm not 100% sold on Maidana by any means, but he's a game little ****er and won't just fall over, which is half the battle against Victor.

He relies too much on being bigger and stronger than his opponent and likes to bully them. A resilient opponent like Maidana takes that away from him. Throw in his heavy handed punches and you've got his kryptonite.

Maidana for me sometimes looks laboured because he can't get ''up'' for fights. His two best performances have come against Khan and Ortiz, contrast that to some mediocre showings against Shot Shot Corley and a gatekeeper in Cayo.

    This is probably true.

I would agree he lacks composure, he showed that when he got frustrated against Mayweather, but by the same token he HAS been in a dog fight with a guy who can really crack and has come out the other side(Berto), so I dont know if its as cut and dry as if you stand up to him, although I take the point he may still of lost to Maidana

Yeah I agree with that. Infact I guess you could say against Morales and Corley he wasn't entirely as motivated as he could of been, and that may of took it for granted.

I didn't take much notice of that, because Rios took it on short notice and wasn't in that good shape.

  7. Rios is fun to watch, but Khan is all business these days and would play with him. Rios needs it up close and personal, and whilst khan does like to exchange a little, i don't see Rios being able to keep it close for long enough periods of time to have an effect on Khan. He is a poor man Maidana, as someone eluded to earlier

I thought Rios looked pretty spectacular in wearing down John Murray, I mean Murray can bang & had Mitchell hurt, but he couldnt put a dent in Rios, or a mark on him even though IMO Murray landed some fine shots before Rios's power took its toll on Murrays face & he swelled up in the 6th.
Khan IMO has a chance if he can use his lightning speed to get Rios out of there early, but if he cant? I can just imagine Rios taking Khans shots to land his own, & theres no way this kid is a poor mans Maidana. Tough tough fight for Khan, & I would pick Rios. Styles all wrong for Khan. This Rios is a dangerous beast.

It works both ways though, Khan is all wrong for Rios as well.

That's what makes it an interesting fight.

fair play Wallet, & btw, when Prescott beat Khan, I was one of the few guys who said here that he would still go onto be a superstar:deal

& he has certainly done that! Rios is so bloody heavy handed though, that Im sure he would give Khan trouble if he can get through the early rounds. Hes an awesome inside fighter IMO, the way he took Murray apart was more spectacular than people give him credit for IMO.
