I don't really know how special trainer work in TUF, but if Freddy only came for GSP, DAMN team koshek HAVE to be **** ! Is it me or Koshek just seems to bring him and is big ego and GSP seems to bring shitload of people with him ?
I swear I'm starting to think Koschek was on something while this whole season was being filmed! Either that, or he's just a straight up douchenozzle who doesn't bring much of anything
But yeah, cool to see Freddy get brought in to help the guys out, and cool of GSP and the boys to show the proper respect :good
Freddy is a legend. In MMA however, the fighters he have worked with haven't seem to improved under him.
I don't know all of the fighters he has trained; you occasionally here about him working with a guy, but never really see much improvement, and since training with him is quite time consuming the fighters tend to go into the under prepared outside of boxing. Maybe my memory isn't working that well and I am basing it all on the one hat sticks out the most: Arlovski for the Fedor fight.
found this http://www.fightofthenight.com/news/freddie-roach-talks-mma-in-a-new-in-depth-interview/ Its not uncommon for interviewers to broach the subject of MMA with world-class boxing coach Freddie Roach, who has helped train several of the sports stars in recent years. Its rare to get him to talk about the sport for the whole interview however, but thats just what Ron Kruk of HDNet has managed to do, and as always with Roach its enjoyable to hear his thoughts. First off Roach gave his impressions on some of the MMA fighters he has worked with. BJ Penn: My first MMA fighter to train with was Penn. Great guy, I think hes one of the best strikers Ive ever worked with he can really punch. Anderson Silva: I couldnt figure him out completely at first. He is one of those guys, in the gym he goes at 30 to 40 percent, you know? Hes just getting his timing, getting his thing going. I had him spar with a couple of my guys, young heavyweights, and it was about even. I said, uh, maybe he not as good..maybe he shouldnt fight Roy Jones, says Roach. Then I watch him on TV and I said, you know what? Thats a whole different guy. Nows hes got his A-game, hes giving it 100% on the TV fight. I see him measure people, set things up. Hes a very intelligent guy, he knows distance, he knows where his comfort zone is. Andrei Arlovski: Andrei I liked a lot because he went from a ground guy to a stand up guy, he loves stand-up. I thought he could do well as a heavyweight. Roach also mentioned several other fighters who he would like to work with one day. GSP: GSP Ive never met, but Id like to work with him though, because hes a talented guy and hes a very intelligent fighter. Fedor Emelianenko: Fedor, I would like to work with him. His balance is not good hes flat footed a lot and hes heavy easy to box if you use in-and-out or side-to-side motion. He can be outboxed but the thing is hes such a good puncher, youve got to be careful of that. And of course hes a Sambo guy as well so he does have a good ground also. Hes one of the most complete fighters out there. In the wide-ranging interview Roach also admitted there was no doubt that it was tougher to switch from boxing to MMA than the other way around since boxers had no previous experience of fighting on the ground, and mixed martial arts is a more complicated sport. Boxing is a fight, its a complicated sport on its own, but then you take the ground game into effect also, and youve got to learn like five different sports to be good a good MMA fighter, he says. When asked which boxer he believed would have the best chance in MMA he suggest a fighter he trains,Manny Pacquiao, since he believed he had the speed and movement to keep out of danger, and noted that the pound-for-pound great had some muay-thai experience. As for who hit harder, a boxer or an MMA fighter, Roach was certain it is the boxer since they train exclusively with their hands. Finally he was asked which sport had the brighter future. I think that in about 10 years if everything keeps going the way it is boxings going to decline a bit with the audience, and MMAs going to have that young audience. I think the boxing promoters have really lost sight of entertaining the people. Be sure to watch the full interview below to hear more of Roachs thoughts on the sport. I know that since that was writen he has worked with GSP and several others.
Arlovsky was looking good until he tried to throw a flying knee Roach sure as hell didn't teach him that
yeah arlovski looked fantastic... up until the flying knee.:nono he made one mistake and he paid for it, if he stuck with the gameplan and was patient he would have won the first round clearly.... I remember that was a affliction show on my birthday january 24, wow what a birthday present it was for me when fedor ko'd arlovsky!!! damn good fight:happy
Arlovski was boxing well but to throw a flying knee that early against a fighter like Fedor was a huge risk and he paid the price.
Freddy is a legend and he he teaches important stuff like footwork, moving your head, combos etc He is one of the more technical coaches out there.
It was eye opening watching the 24/7's with Pac on the pads then watching the TUF'ers. I know experience comes into play when making that comparison, but we could do with more coaches like Roach in MMA in terms of sharpening boxing skills
