It's not that you'd be biased towards Froch, it's that you seem biased against Ward. And these reasons are? Ward has been doing solid business for years in the mid-sized Oracle. He sold 7,600 tickets fighting the anti-draw, Chad Dawson, which speaks to his ability to pull in fans despite an unpopular opponent. He's not a superstar, but that's got nothing to do with whether he's fighting in Vegas. Remember when they send Bradley-Alexander to Detroit to get the site fee and no one turned up? Because the only place either man sold tickets was in Alexander's hometown. I thought Ward got injured - cut over his eye, I believe? What are you basing the rest of this on? HBO makes nothing from the site fees. It plays no part in their broadcast strategy. Only the promoter and the fighters, and apparently the fans, care about location. Too much is made of hometown advantage, IMO, and it's become a crutch to criticise Ward. Froch got the benefit of every doubt against Ward in Atlantic City for two of the most ludicrous scorecards I've seen. But it's not the first time Carl's benefited from that - Dirrell in Nottingham, the overly wide card against Kessler this weekend and against Ward in AC.
My opinion on Ward is that he's a tremendously talented fighter. I'm just outlining what he's done in his career to date without judging. I do have a judgement on him as person but I'm not going to give it as I'd need to give the reason for it and I'm not getting into that. Ward did indeed get a cut over his eye which delayed the Super Six final and it was put back to the week before Christmas. Froch's camp were very surprised at the length of this delay. Other than fighting in the Caribbean this was to be Ward's only fight outside of California in nearly 6 yrs. The cut was rather bizarrely inflicted by the inside of a headguard during training. In terms of where he fights next, Ward will make plenty just through his HBO contract no matter who he fights, but if it is to be against a 'name' then the venue will come into negotiations. As an elite p4p US boxer it is incronguous to be fighting in Oakland when he should be on the cusp of ppv status over there given his ranking in the sport. Was just reading an article pertaining to this over at the scene actually: http://www.***********.com/like-it-not-andre-carl-froch-holds-cards-168--65986
Thought that article was largely fan-boy dribbling, if I'm honest. There are no facts or figures to put his claims into context. There's one major issue with this logic: This content is protected
Yeah I don't have a lot of time for that author to be fair but there was a degree of truth in what he said without backing it up with stats etc. And yes in terms of their head to head you'd think Ward would hold the advantages, but unfortunately the moral high ground you mention has never held a lot of sway in boxing! As I say, Ward has backed himself into a corner to a certain extent because by not venturing out across the States properly before now he's still not a sure fire seller in the traditional big fight US locations. And you'd think nobody with a 'name' and more than a couple of brain cells to rub together is going to do what Dawson did and cave in to every Ward demand and fight in Oakland. And although Hershman is a Ward man surely HBO are going to want some payback sooner rather than later.
7000 tickets sold in a 20,000 seater venue for a Unified and ring World champ is atrocious...I have seen domestic level British fighters pull the same crowds. This was a sold out event 18-19,000 people including high VIP seat and box ticket prices, it was also on PPV in two countries This is a BIG money fight (albeit no Maywether or Pac type money) not 7k cheap tickets on free to air T.V
The casual will believe Ward has no belts he had WBC and super WBA until he got injured and still has the super version of carls WBA regular version
And you're not biased against Froch? Come on! Wish Froch would just avoid talk of Ward if he can. He knows he'd lose and no one wants to see that **** again.
Contrary to how it might appear, I really like Froch. He's the role model for taking tough, competitive fights. Unfortunately, some of his fans overstate how good he is and make excuses for him. His comments about Ward were childish. Basically, I lost clearly and want to make out he ran all night. It's a convenient get out clause.
I've no interest in seeing Ward-Froch again. The super six final, despite what 2 scorecards said, was utterly one sided.
Ward is the better boxer but who gives a ****, Froch draws excitement, draws crowds, is value for money, never backs down, travels. Who gives a **** about a undefeated record if you never take risks and fight out of your comfort zone. Dude beat the **** out of a weight drawn Dawson, who cares? Why not fight him at light heavyweight? Thats a ***** move. Like fighting a dude with no arms. Ward needs to prove he has some gonads man. People will have utter respect for the man if he comes to England, shuts Froch up again and take his belts away. Until then he is a safety first merchant.
