Froch took tremendous right hands, even got up from a near lights out incident. Carl Froch toughness can't be in question, and if you do question it, then you're oblivious.
Completely incorrect...you need to rewatch the fight...Froch was down and dazed but he wasnt hurt as in he was about to be an open target for shots.. Groves actually looks way more out of it in the 9th (not withstanding that the stoppage was prenature) than Froch did in the first. Froch was in trouble for sure but he wasnt hurt..seriously you need to watch that again as the silly part is in everyone comparing the first to the 9th...Froch's eyes are clear and he has his wits about him and as soon as he is up it is clear he can defend himself and he is looking relatively solid..
And if you think that just because he went down and Groves didnt then that means he was more hurt then you do not understand the fight game.
I am watching the replay again now...he was not missing...i dont think you have watched this in replay
to put this thread in context, this time is probably the first time Froch didnt prove that he won (perhaps Dirrell too). Compare that to say Calzaghe who got bizarre premature stoppages for at least half of his career. and tbf we dont know how the fight would have gone. Lil G was heading toward a decision win and froch towards a decision loss, but also looked as if Groves was preparing to get KOed, whislt Froch wasnt going to get knocked out by Gbaby.
Froch is the man!! Groves did a great job but couldnt finish Froch. Froch deserves credit for hos amazing heart and chin. Groves was being a dick pre fight Froch post... Who the **** cares...
Noone could ever question how tough Froch is, just dont think he deserves too much credit for that 'TKO'
The op asks, "what more can you ask from a fighter?". Well personally I prefer to see a world champion (although in this case Froch is merely a title holder) who actually possesses some skill in the ring and at least a modicum of class outside of it. Froch showed neither. He's a glorified tough man with a self imposed warrior tag and a ****ing awful attitude. No wonder boxing fans are getting wise to this ****.
I think everybody was robbed by the ref. This is the type of fight I love to see, where the boxer dominates the first half but slowly the slower tougher fighter starts inflicting damage and the tables start to turn ala Margarito vs Cotto, Taylor vs Chavez, etc. But the ref robbed us of seeing if Groves was gonna be tough enough to hold on or if Frochs pressure was going to win him the fight like against Taylor.
I can't stand Froch but Groves was already slowing down and Carl was coming on landing more frequently, George lost pop and speed on his punches late in the fight and was starting to keep hus hands low...In my honest opinion Froch was gonna tko him eventually or either sweep yhe last few rounds and with those surprisingly close cards could have won a decision, that was the weakest stoppage I've seen in quite some time Groves was still defending and swinging but I think he was out of gas and was on his way to a Jermaine Taylor type ending...
Watched the full replay a few times now, not just the stoppage. It's actually far easier to get a clear understanding of the fight with the sound off. Rounds 2, 3, 5 and 6 are actually fairly close in the number of shots landed (though Froch is consistantly going to the body more, which paid later dividends), Froch actually only get's wobbled by 1 more flush right in about 5 or 6, but at no point appears hurt or in any danger. Far from being 'dominated' as the commentary suggests he just sticks to his game plan and at no point really appears flustered (although he is a little more cautious after the KD and keeps his left hand up more than usual). He works patiently to the body and does a reasonable job of slipping or blocking a lot of Groves' shots. In short, whilst Groves was still winning at the time of the stoppage (I gave Froch 2, 5 and 8 ) it is actually nowhere close to the Groves domination many are claiming (and as promulgated by the commentary team). The stoppage (which I do consider premature) makes more sense if you watch the ref closely in the 30 or so seconds before he waves it off. Groves is unsteady on his feet for nearly a full 30 seconds before the stoppage although he does briefly appear to get his feet under him before the final assault. Prior to final stoppage, for about 5 or 10 seconds Groves is holding Froch with his head leaning on Frochs shoulder and dragging his feet - the ref is watching very closely and appears ready to step in, obviously thinking Groves is seriously hurt. My take is that Groves was knackered and grabbing a breather as much as stunned, but I wasn't the one in the ring, whether that gives a clearer or more muddied perspective. Anyway although Groves appears fine on his feet when they break, a coupla seconds later Froch bullies him back on the ropes and catches him again, leaving him flailing and provoking the final stoppage. The point is, rightly or wrongly the ref was already close to stopping it, in the belief that Groves was actually gone in the prior clinch, the final few punches on the ropes were simply the final straw, not the whole reason for him to wave it off. It was premature IMO, but it's also clear that the ref genuinely believed Groves was seriously hurt and wished to protect him. EDIT: FWIW the more times I watch that last 30 seconds, the more convinced I am that Groves wasn't going to make it out of the round. Still doesn't justify the stoppage but he was basically done with close to half a round left.
The stoppage was maybe 5 seconds premature. Now what would a gassed out, helpless Groves have done in those 5 seconds? He wasn't throwing anything, just stumbling around like a drunken sailor. Look, Groves gave us a great fight, but let's face it: He's inexperienced, he didn't pace himself well and just shot his load too early and simply lacked the stamina to last 12 rounds at this pace.
I don't think the stoppage was inevitable at all. Froch survived being hurt. Many fighters have survived being hurt. Groves doesn't have a history of being KO'd all the time or being unable to weather a storm and Froch doesn't KO everyone. There's no real reason to believe a KO was inevitable. Possible of course but far from inevitable. I wasn't particularly impressed with Froch either. Taking a beating for most of the fight, getting schooled and then eventually having some success against a guy you were supposed to walk through easily is not something I rate so highly. Froch wasn't that impressive to me, Groves' inexperience and the referee were more responsible for the result than any Froch brilliance.
Groves in a headlock and stops the fight by dumb ref.Now Froch is running away from Groves,What a warrior.
