No way this can be PPV. It would be insane. I can't see them pulling much more than a thousand or subscribers, at £10 a pop, 2am in the morning for an internet stream. So they're only going to gross say 10-50k. Then they've got to pay for the stream etc. Just doesn't make any sense:think
I'm with Kid Lucky, this is a way for Hennesey to 'show' the networks that he has some kind of plan B. All that infrastructure, detail and advertising would take a while to set up and it was only Thursday Bunce was saying Setanta are still looking to buy it. Not sure why setanta are getting so much stick for this though - they've NEVER shown a Froch fight. Sky and setanta are the guilty parties here. Never mind, I'll be ringside :happy
Is this an example of pride overcoming sense? Hennessey obviously had a price in mind for one of the TV companies to pick this up and they've not been prepared to meet it. So now, instead of taking the lower amount and showing his fighter's most significant fight, he's going to get even less money by showing it on an internet stream. The more I've thought about this the more laughable it seems. Frank Warren must have a right chuckle to himself about stuff like this. It just reinforces the fact he's the premier promoter in this country by a mile.
Couldn't agree more, this isn't their fault. I'm getting a bit tired of people whinging everytime they don't have a fight they want to see. They can't show everything, they have a budget.
You're right about the Setanta bit too. They are the one network here that has not shown a Froch fight. How long are you going over there for mate?
Stop defending them, for a self-proclaimed 'home of boxing' channel they're not even bothering there arse with any big fights anymore. And even when they did, they showed it on Setanta Sports 2 so freeview viewers couldn't even see the big fights - while the 'home of boxing' shows some shitty re-run of a non-league football game on SS1. Home of boxing, what a joke. Setanta have turned into another Sky, they started off hopeful enough - the honeymoon period is over.
ITV are the guilty party ... they are Hennessey's partners and should be backing his fighters. What type of message does this send to all his oter fighters. Obvioulsy because of there budgets they are only interested in domestic samll hall bust-ups. If Murray, O'Donnell, Witter (again) get a big fight which needs a bit of backing then it looks like they can forget it from ITV. Sky have got their man Hatton the following week and didn't Hennessey walk out on them to join ITV. Setanta have never shown a Hennessey fight. They don't have an unlimited budget as every day there's a story about them struggling for money. And they've probably blown a large proportion of their budget backing their promoters Hayemaker and their man David Haye. If Sky or Setanta show this fight and Froch wins and if he defends back over here then I bet he'd end up back on ITV. Bet there's no loyalty from Hennessey there. Lay off Sky and Setanta. Sky have kept boxing going in this country for years and Setanta have given us fans some fantastic extras this last couple of years. I say blame ITV ... they should get behind their man!
Spot on. But this is not cut and dry. If you go on the site there is no way of paying yet, instead there's a 'register your interest' link to gauge whether anyone will buy it. Once they start accepting payments, however, thats when it is for real but for now you can take it as a bargaining tool Hennessy is using to force more money from the tv companies by showing them he has the facility to go it alone. If his stubborn streak is maintained and he does go through with it then it could turn out to be one of the most cockeyed promotional decisions in recent times.
I'm not defending them, I'm just realistic about budgetary controls TV networks have. They can't show every fight. I think you're exaggerating there, most are still show on Setanta 1. While they may claim to be the 'Home of Boxing' they never claimed to be a pure boxing channel. I'm pretty satisfied with what Setanta are doing with boxing. At the very least we have more boxing available to us than a few years ago and I feel that's vicariously transferred into other channels. ITV show a lot more now and Channel 5 show ESPN shows.
"The home of boxing" is a tag line, its not meant to be taken literally. Setanta show a damn sight more boxing than Sky, ITV, BBC etc.
There's an article up on BBC. Hennessy says there won't be any TV deal. I was hoping someone might buy it at the last minute. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/7995665.stm
In the states for four nights with a mate. I think we'll spend Thurs-Fri in New York then get the train to Foxwoods on the Saturday am and stay the weekend.
Froch said it himself, Setanta is turning into the "home of foreign boxing". Setanta should scrap the stupid deal with Sauerland and just pick and choose their fights and spend bigger on less. Incredible that we watch **** like Sanavia, Pianetta, Huck, and then can't get to see Froch versus Taylor.
Khan vs Prescott got a reported 49,000 PPV buys at £15. They had a hell of a lot of promotion for this fight, undercard was a world title fight between two known UK fighters and Khan is the second most recognisable boxer in the UK to the average fan. Was on British TV, so guarantee of good picture and sound quality. Froch vs Taylor has had no publicity, apart from on itv4 where not many people would have watched it, undercard is unrecognisable to the average fan and Froch is not a marketable fighter yet to warrant PPV. Not many people will trust a website stream at £10 and can get it cheaper/free in other places. They will be lucky to get a 1,000 people buying this.
