I wondered at the time how that fight would have gone, my inkling was Froch would have been to tough, hit too hard and would have ground him down after a couple of hairy moments.

GGG vs Canelo 2 confirmed my suspicion.

I know Golovkin isn't quite the fighter he was when he was knocking out Matthew Macklin and Darren Barker (the likes of which Froch would have laid out in spectacular fashion)

But I saw Golovkins eyes on that fight and mentally, when Canelo stood center ring, took golovkins shots, beat his chest and fired back, Golovkin shrunk.

If Alvarez standing in front of you in a battle of attrition is too much, you have no business in the ring with Froch at 168lb.

    It is what it is

Good fight but I’d favour Golovkin. Look what a green Groves did to him, albeit it was Froch in his autumn years. Golovkin wouldn’t have wilted in the same way, allowing a gift of a stoppage in the first fight.

Canelo is an ATG and on peds.

    Simple as that...

Would have been a good fight but Golovkin was something of a mythological figure in 2014 and I always find Froch (like a lot of stereotypical ‘hard’ low left hand granite chin types) was somewhat underrated ability-wise.

I’d favour Froch to take absolutely no risks whatsoever and just end up being too big for Golovkin.

I always believed froch would have beaten GGG, after a torrid start for both, I believe Carl would have just bitten down hard on his shield and ground him down.

Never believed in all the hype that came with Golovkin.

I think ggg would have jabbed frochs head off back when the fight was talked about.... Froch was a bigger strong guy and had a great chin but he fought face first and wasn't invincible... Now I know ggg can box quite well with someone coming at him (canelo 2) I'd definitely favour him.

    "Boxed quite well"

He got lit the **** up by canelo and let's not forget he was supposed to be the big bad bull canelo was scared of.

Never did see GGG "jab the head off" a far taller, rangey opponent with a world class jab himself like Froch.

But that's the thing with golovkin, he is attributed mythical abilities which he never actually proved, I. E "he hits harder than heavyweights" then Alvarez eats everything he's got flush on the chin. Doubt Alvarez would stand up to many heavyweights like that.

as most people seem to be doing, you're judging Golovkin on his 36 year old self, after what, 400 fights? Against absolute prime Canelo.
What do you think 28 year old GGG does with him?
Just stop it and have some perspective.

    Also

"Gift stoppage" in the first Groves fight is truth

Groves was gifted a nice rescue by the referee, 10 seconds before he got folded like an accordion laying on his own leg like the second fight. Anyone with a brain who knows Groves knows exactly where that fight was going.

It also gifted Groves a massive payday in the rematch which wouldn't have happened had he been laid out cold as he was about to.

    Gift indeed.

I don't know because prime 28 year old golovkin was fighting man like Matthew Macklin which doesn't tell me much at all outside of he can beat a guy Froch would send to the hospital within 5 rounds.

Golovkin doesn't use a young man's style, I don't think he's that far removed from his domestic journeyman destroying best.

GGG decision. The much better boxer. Better footwork than Froch too. I don't think he'd have rocked Froch but Froch could be hurt or dropped by just walking into shots, so he might get a flash KD of sorts. Other than being bigger I don't really see what Froch does that's better than GGG. Groves had a ton of success against him utilising the jab, which G's best punch. Dirrell really should have got the nod over Froch too, though he fights differently to GGG so I'm not sure how relevant is to the discussion. This might be a rare fight in which GGG actually has the better defence and hand speed too.

I think people are underrating Froch's boxing skills and ring IQ a little bit here by saying GGG would jab his head off.

Froch in the first Groves fight was nowhere near mentally or physically tip top for Groves as he never considered him a threat. Froch still came through after taking a hellatious battering, although controversially

And then there's the Froch who outboxed Arthur Abraham far more convincingly than anyone before or since.

The come from behind, scintillating stoppage of Jermaine Taylor, away from home after suffering a pretty heavy knockdown in the 3rd.

Then there's the performance against Bute after a humiliating and one sided defeat. All that tells me that Froch gives GGG all he can handle and I would slightly favour Froch with a punishing, FOTY contender points win.

Bollocks.. He had a close fight with a talented peak atg in canelo when he himself is very much in decline and me and many other still think he won.

What do you want... Ggg comes forward... Gets a draw... Ggg boxes off the back foot... Gets a loss.... Majority of opinions think he won both

Froch wasn't some slick upper body movement defensive wizard.. He had an iron chin, good stamina, respectable power, and a good jab... Golovkin isn't just a one trick pony who is **** when his power fails him... Froch is there to be hit.. And he would be... I don't think ggg stops him... But I think froch would take some serious damage and touch the floor once or twice
