Benavidez has much more physical advantages. He's 6ft, has freakishly long arms etc but Gavin's hard to hit. He moves around well and slips everything. It'd be a great fight but at this stage i'd go with Benavidez.
But surely Khan could have made much more money fighting Maidana than Salita and Malignaggi. Fair enough, Salita was his mandatory at the time but if he's looking at it from a business point of view, like he is with Maidana, he should have ducked Salita too as he wasnt a big enough name.
Well Gavin is 24 and Benavidez is only 18. I don't know why people are talking about Benavidez as if he doesn't have any credentials. The kid has a 120-5 amateur record. He was the youngest ever Golden Gloves Champion at 16. He has sparred with Pacquiao, Khan, and Bradley already. That will be invaluable experience for him. I think the question of him vs Gavin would be more relevant in a year or two. By then we will have seen a lot more of what he can do as a pro to know whether he is really that good.
Love Buncey's posts on this topic! Still haven't got halfway through his book but really should finish it soon. Is Buncey at the boxfest in Norfolk?
BoxFest is gone. As for Golden Gloves at 16...this is confusing. I've not met an American fighter yet who failed to win the Golden Gloves. It is one of the American national championships and it is also available in cities and states. I replied to this thread because I've seen and read too many of these 'young American fighter' love threads over the years. Who was the kid at the 2001 World champs in Belfast - he went on a run in Belfast and was getting close to a medal, but then the Russians had him thrown out because he was only 16. He went back to America and did a deal with Mercenary Manny and ... what happened? He was sliced bread, trust me, he was that good. Khan's people, Golden Boy, talked boldly about a big name - Khan would fight a Klitschko. His next opponent, however, will be selected by Golden Boy for him...so don't blame the Kid. Adios.
Bunce....US based fighters are far superior to UK based fighters so when there is a buzz about a young gun coming through it is only natural to get excited about him. Only time will tell though.
Yeh winning the Golden Gloves is a bit like winnings the ABA's. Mark Moran won those 3 times, means nothing. Mercenary Manny.....love it. The guy gets so much respect if only people new the truth. I think Khan may have a bit more power of GBP than we think.
Gavin by close but clear decision. Both have good amateur backgrounds, with Gavin having showed he can beat solid domestic level fighters professionally. Benavidez is a very good prospect but hasn't faced the same opposition either in the amateurs or as a pro as good as Gavin. Freddie Roach could turn Benavidez into something special though
Agree, agree, agree...but we have talent coming through that we ignore. Boxfest was scrapped about ten days ago. Khan will fight the man that GB put in front of him - he wants Bradley, Alexander or Maidana. He is not the problem. I found the McClellan and Benn documents the other day - looking at Manny's cut made me feel warm inside. Adios.
I was there when ronnie heffron got the better of Amir in khans gym an then an even spar a few days later I believe Amir fights better than he spars but I have never seen benavidez but time will tell were both novices in the pro game an could lose are next fight not that I think we will but this is a better question when we get to championship level
