How? He beat Ortiz on BAD. Only hardcore fans watch that. Ortiz himself wasn't much of a star when the fight happened. Maidana was just some unknown Argentinian who was bought over for Ortiz to knock out, things didn't go to plan.

Remember, boxing is a fringe sport in the States. Unless your Oscar, Mayweather or Pac nobody knows you. Some fighters like Ward and Juan Diaz are regional attractions but that's it. Maidana is a nobody in the US.

Anyway, why are we talking about this? The thread is about Benavidez-Gavin

What pisses me off is everyone says Maidana isn't a big enough name but what was Salita? Khan had no problem fighting that mandatory even though he was a nobody.

Saw him in the World Champs last year and instantly became a fan. I thought he'd stay am till the Olympics so when I read he'd gone pro with Golden Boy I was like :happy

Frankie Gomez-Frankie Gavin in a couple of years for the 140lb title :yep:lol:

Let me just say, I would like Khan to fight Maidana. I hate all this "he's not a big enough name to fight me" bollocks in boxing. We just want the best to fight the best. I was just arguing the point that Maidana is not as popular as Malignaggi.

Well, the Khan-Malignaggi fight was on BAD as well you know? :D

Anyway, I just think that if HBO and GB had wanted Maidana, they had plenty material to build him for a bigger fight with Khan. A banger who had just taken out another prospect. But they preferred Paulie, because he could still generate a buzz and was no risk.

I dont like the way everybody is now taking the line from the promoters that Pauile was a superstar and had to be taken. It was the line that the promoters put out there, then the Khan-fans started saying, then everybody started saying it, now its become an accepted fact.

Maidana is still a nobody and would never be a good fight by that logic.

    Would he **** hot!

I honestly think Gavin will be mixing with the Elite within 18 months. I'm big on his skillset. Even non-punchers should blow away the level of fighters he's been in with, and he's pretty much done that.

Against someone who will really come to fight, I think we'll see Frankies full repoirtoire and will see what a fine exponent of the sweet science he is :yep

Hopefully Daws at the end of this year of right at the beginning of next. Daws will really test him, he's sturdy, consistent, digs in his punches (without approaching the status of being 'dangerous') but is beatable.

Frankie will really have to dig deep, but he'll learn more in fighting Daws than in 10 fights with the kind of fighters he likely would be going in with.

If not, Gavin Rees would be another great choice of opponent.

Anyways, 'Battle Of The Frankie G's' would sell like hot cakes.

Benavidez will be a fully fledged Middle by the time he's in his early 20s by the looks of it.

What's the point in talking about who would win? They are two very talented fighters that look like they can go far but there's not a chance of them fighting in the near future. We should only be asking this question when they've mixed it with a better class of opponent and when they're at the stage where a fight between the two would sell well

I was on a rant... Hatton without doubt and Graham for creating Hatton....

It just pisess me off when people go on like the states is the holy land. I agree they produce fantastic fighters, There pool is far far larger than ours yet we are never given credit ourselves... This Benevidez is being rated purely on 1 mans word and a few guys in the press, To have people say he's the future and that he'd beat Frankie Gavin is ludicris.. He's the future of the sport and he'd beat Frankie based on WHAT???:-:)huh:-(

I agree buddy. Britain's miniscule in comparison to the states and boxing isn't really a big sport over here at all in the grand scheme of things. American fight fans always seem to look down on Brits for whatever reason. Calzaghe, Froch, Hatton, Haye ; none are really respected in America, not in the way they hype there own guys such as Alexander, Chad Dawson, Pavlik etc. But to be fair this Benavidez guy looks a pretty sharp cat.

:good I didn't like the Paulie fight from the start but understood why it happened. No more excuses for Khan now. Time to step up now. Even if he fights Maidana he'll be getting it easy cos he won't be fighting Bradley and Alexander.
