Oh boy. Another BIG announcement from DLH? :rofl Just 'man up' and come out of the closet and stop with these bull**** trial runs where you chicken out.
Schaefer was the one who said Canelo's 9/15 opponent would accompany a "larger" announcement, that is what I am trying to speculate on in this thread. Cotto announces 12/1 at MSG with a opponent to be named later. GBP refusing to move off of the 9/15 date. Arum likely aware of the plans and in no hurry to help facilitate them. Seems to me like we will get Canelo in a stay busy plus Cotto on 12/1.
Arum is the one to lose here so I hope he moves to 10/6. They will lose more buys than they will gain by fighting on 9/15 with Canelo fighting the same night for free on Showtime. Arum, just move it FFS.
I'm not fussed if they happen on the same night (it'll equal a great night of boxing for me), but if anyone should move it, it should be GBP. Not only did they jump on the date later, but their's is a meaningless fight, too.
Top Rank-quality match up GBP-Another slug for Canello to ko I will stick with Top Rank on this one.:good
GBP will put it on Showtime for free. That will hurt PPV sales for Martinez vs Chavez and that is fact. IF GBP actually has Cotto lined up for Canelo on 12/1, then it makes complete sense why they are refusing to budge since moving to 10/6 would likely cripple the 12/1 date. Arum moving Sergio to 10/6 means that they won't be competing with free Canelo and also does not affect any future plans for either fighter. Seems like a no brainer to me, assuming I'm correct on the larger plans.
Actually, if the TR card does well and the GB doesn't then Canelo's stock drops in terms of being a PPV attraction. Stupid game of chicken for both but I see GB actually getting the short end of the stick on this one.
There is still money being put up for this fight and people expect to make money from it. Sho won't be happy unless they get a set amount of viewers. Advertisers won't be happy unless there is a set amount of viewers tuning in. You seem to think GB/Sho CAN'T lose on this . They can. They can actually lose big if it flops. This is still dollars in/ dollars out. If GB doesn't lose on this card if it flops, Sho will take it out on them for the next. EDIT: Who's to say Sho will even be on board when the replacement is finally announced? I doubt they have promised much money up front for good ole TBA.
Agree and I understand the way it works but I highly doubt it will be a big flop, especially considering the state of the economy and fan's reluctance to shell out for PPV (Chavez for $50 or Canelo for $0?). Worst case IMO is average ratings that would likely still exceed Tarver-Kayode and Ortiz-Lopez. Plus, a good way to soften the blow for Showtime and advertisers in the event of a flop would be guarantees for the Canelo-Cotto PPV fight. Major losers that night will be Arum, DiBella, Martinez and Chavez. If I'm wrong and GBP does not have Cotto lined up, then **** em and I hope they move to 10/6 :!:
I don't see announcing Canelo's next opponent AFTER Sept. 15 having any relevance on who people will watch on September 15. Saying IF Canelo beats a WW can he will face Cotto won't raise much interest in Canelo vs Can regardless. Just because GBP doubted Arum would make Jr/Martinez isn't much of an excuse for them to claim jump the date. This is the second time they have put on a free card against a TR PPV. I think GBP is looking for excuses not to have to deal with TR. :deal
Sure, It'll sting their sales a wee bit. Arum has already conceded that. But with Canelo's fight being a non-PPV, the sting won't be as potent. Because viewers aren't being forced to choose which one they'll spend their money on. They're just being forced to choose which they'll spend their time on. And considering the son of a the greatest Mexican fighter ever is in for the biggest fight of his life against an Argentine, I'm willing to bet Mexican fans (as well as the rest) will be more inclined to spend their time, that they've paid for, on the HBO event. Canelo's free showing will be just flicked over to occassionally, or worse, missed all together to be caught on repeat the next day or whenever. It's free, and it's against a no-name opponent, so ain't no big deal if it ain't caught live. Chavez-Martinez, however, can not be missed. And GBP's plan of doing something on the December date, seems to be something recent. And as mentioned, Arum had the September date booked in ages ago. The onus would be on GBP to move it.
