Gene Tunney vs. Cleveland Williams

Tunney fancied himself to be an intellectual, he probably would have liked to turn out some tomes.

 

That depends on the stages of their cases. Dempsey was actually despised for a good portion of his career much as Ali was. It wasn't until late in both of their careers that public opinion more widely turned in their favors.

 

I’m referring to the appraisal of the second fight as it happened & shortly thereafter.

 

Dempsey was actually the people’s choice in the rematch.

 

Never in doubt. I respect & admire Tunney quite a bit, but he was not terribly likeable.

 

yes Tunney does look mightily impressive against those technically primitive short white men. Would Tunney dare get into the ring vs Ernie Terrell?

 

tunney was quite vociferous about his views even for the times , considering he was so repulsed he even refused to spar with black fighters.

also name me a 6’3 215lb fighter Tunney actually faced? He beat up on short small white men his entire career

 

&? I’m not interested in running him through a modern Left-wing purity test, anymore than someone should run your views through a similar lens a hundred years from now.

 

It’s one thing to step in a ring with Harry Greb or Jack Dempsey, but he wouldn’t have the sand to fight Ernie Terrell

 

I don’t rate Williams personally. Very clear decision for Tunney

 

Would Tunney freak out at the sight of a Black Cat? Seriously, too fast, too smart, too mobile, too busy for Cleve. What was the best decision win Williams posted? Because I think this one's going to the final bell, and how does Gene lose against an opponent that stationary?

 

There are photos of Tunney dining, sitting next to Joe Louis,perhaps his opinions mellowed over the years?
Or perhaps his racial views were formed more from career convenience than personal conviction?

I've read, although I haven't pursued the veracity of it, that Loughran was involved in developing Harold Johnson.

Let's face it. The aftermath of Jack Johnson-James J. Jeffries was deadly. Lil' Artha' was not Peter Jackson, or Harry Wills, or Joe Gans or Sam Langford. As for Louis, it wasn't merely his public conduct, but his first east coast coming out party was against the "Fascist" Carnera, then his first defeat was to the "Nazi," Schmeling. (What if Johnson had defended against a Hun during WW I?)

Dempsey always admired Louis for being more of a gentleman in the ring than he himself was, and of course they were quite friendly when together on television.

 

When are we going to apply politics to fighters to the extent we do with Tunney, & Tunney alone. Who gives a **** what he believed in the context of a fight? He can’t beat Cleve Williams because he voted Republican?
