Are these Quarry threads for real? Tunney wins every round leading up to the stoppage (via cuts) in the 9th or 10th round... he even drops Quarry in the 8th or 9th round.
Really? He beat Dempsey twice... he even dropped him. Quarry beat a pre-prime Lyle and a very limited Shavers. Mac Foster sucked! He was dominated and stopped by the elite fighters he faced... Ali x2, Frazier x2, and Norton. Even Chuvalo beat him. Tunney lost once (Greb). He beat Greb about 100 times though. He was never stopped... 1 of only 3 Lineal HW Champs who were never stopped. Marciano and Bowe are the other 2. Somebody said he was down just once in 68 fights... that might be Boxrec totals but it's actually over 80 fights... 77-1-4 is my count.
Speed and movement of Gene tough for Jerry to overcome but Jerry had some bombs so Gene best be alert. Throw Jerry in with some of the giants and punchers and he would fare much better,Quarry's chin nullified power and had 2 good punching hands Tunny UD 10 or 15rds
Beg to differ Joe...Tunney did prove himself and how, against the Hard Rock from Down Under Tom Heeney. In 1928,Tom Heeney who beat Johnny Risko, Jim Maloney, drew with a prime Jack Sharkey and Paolino Uzcudun among others, recieved a terrible beating from Gene Tunney in 1928, Tunney's last bout] and was kod in the 12th rd. Heeney went downhill from that beating, losing most all his bouts. So if a Tom Heeney draws with a prime Jack Sharkey and Paolino Uzcudun, beats a tough Johnny Risko, ko's Jim Maloney ,and then receives a resounding beating from Gene Tunney, didn't Tunney prove himself ? I should think so. ! Cheers...
You are right. I did not read the entire thread and Patterson was indeed acknowledged. But the point remains. Quarry gave Patterson two really tough fights. In my opinion, they were toss-ups. But it does not really matter. The point is that Quarry did do well against one of the faster HW champions [and Patterson was that - don't try to tell me otherwise]. But answering the question asked in the thread [Tunney vs Quarry], I do believe that Gene was in a different league and would have beaten Quarry - even if he stepped out of a time-machine. A Tunney having access to the various advances of the late sixties and early seventies compared to the time he actually fought in, would have beaten Quarry with more comfort. But in either case, it would have been decision wins.
True, Patterson was still very good and still had quick hands but he wasn't a stick and mover type... he was there to be hit. Quarry got a draw and a win vs. Patterson. Quarry was dropped once and dropped Patterson several times. They were good performances by Quarry.
Patterson deserved both fights...Quarry faded badly in the latter rounds...I saw both fights live back then...I shook my head in disgust at that stupid California 5 point must system. And to repeat my take on the thread question, Tunney would own Quarry....and I;m a big JQ fan with no prejudices here. Tunney would have put on a master class and would have taken the best that Jerry could dish out.
