I'd like to add, what makes GGG look beatable is that he seems easy to hit. IMHO he is not easy to hit - his fighting style seems to me based on getting a feel for the opponent's punching power, and if it is lacking, he moves in for the kill regardless of getting hit. Against Stevens he was fairly cautious - against Murray it looked to me as though he was letting himself get hit on purpose. At one point Murray loosed off a sweet flurry, and GGG just shrugged and carried on doing what he was doing. I suspect that Golovkin may well possess an ATG chin on top of his other attributes. The only punch that I saw that landed on him that remotely seemed to faze him was a crunching left hook by Stevens, which appeared to straighten Golovkin's legs out for a second. I reckon that punch would have floored a lot of other MW's.
Golovkin is a hurtful puncher no doubt but he looks very sluggish and is very hittable, I think Tommy Hearns would knock him out early at Middleweight.
That to me is an excellent post. I don't know whether GGG would beat Tiger. Maybe he would. But your remark "he better do something soon" is so relevant. An argument could be made for Martin Murray being his best opponent. No disrespect to him,he's a good brave fighter but I used to watch fight of the week from America every week. It seems that almost every month Tiger used to be on,beating better fighters than Martin. Men like Henry Hank,Florentino Fernandez who looked a big middleweight to me. Before he left England he stopped Terry Downes. Won the title from Gene Fullmer. These were leagues ahead of todays middleweights.
I didn't say he couldn't. GGG "could" stop a lot of ATGs. Doesn't mean he would. You claim he "would waste him." GGG really hasn't fought this level of opponents.
Bingo! Its not GGG's fault that he's so feared and none of these guys will fight him....and he may go on to prove himself an atg....but he ain't one now, and I still pick Tiger in this matchup.
I'm picking GGG by UD. I just think he is the bigger, stronger fighter with almost more amateur experience than anyone in history. He has beaten decent fighters so far, but he is absolutely dominating them. DT lost to far worse fighters while GG has been on a massive KO streak.
Aren't these prior era to present comparatives a bit off considering the weigh-in change? Ring weight: Golovkin was 168 for Proska Golovkin was 170 for Macklin Golovkin was 173 for Rubio Moving up each fight .. not sure of the Murray number What was Tiger's actual or average ring weight? Could Tiger get anywhere close to 170 - 175 by the night of the fight? [Don't mean late in his career .. when he moved to LHW either] Or, is about 165 - 167 his max. Or, would he have been at 162 on the night? He would be giving away a few inches of height to Golovkin so you would like to see weight parity at least. If he enters the ring at 162 versus 173 (Golovkin) and with the height disadvantage he has a lot to overcome. Golovkin is really a SMW (compared to most middleweights of the past) .. and will be one pretty quick in this era (considering his age, challenge in making weight, and the lack of any talent at middleweight). He's very similar in size to Andre Ward. Golovkin was 173 lbs for Rubio (who came in over the middleweight limit and entered the ring at 181 lbs) Ward was 176 lbs for Dawson (Chad came in at 185 lbs) Golovkin is 179 cm in height (5'10.5") versus Ward at 183 cm (6'0") Golovkin's reach is 178 cm (70") versus Ward's at 180 cm (71") So, GGG is putting on 13 lbs from 160 while Ward puts on 8 from 168. A rather immaterial difference between the two ...
