Benton achieved his highest ranking by winning a decision over Joey Giardello who then redeemed himself with a win over an ancient Sugar Ray Robinson and was given a title shot against Dick Tiger. At the same time Benton fought a less heralded but hard-hitting Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, losing that fight by a split decision and allowing Giardello to not give him a shot at his newly won title. Lou Duva who was Giardello's manager and later worked with Benton said that he avoided a rematch with Benton. Benton's role for the most part was to take on the tough contenders of the era and show who was worthy to challenge for the title and who was not. No, except by the 1960s.
