Like Mendoza, I think Jim Jeffries deserves a mention. Granted, he was never hit during his prime by any similarly sized giants, but Fitz, Choynski and Tom Sharkey were not chopped liver in the power punching department. It might also merit mentioning that this was in an era of two and four ounce gloves. Sometimes, it gets stated that Jack Johnson's lack of power was responsible for Jeff lasting into round 15. Lil Artha wore him down, didn't punch him out. (At 35, Jeff wasn't just coming off a five year layoff, but coping with the strain of a 100 pound weight loss under a scorching sun, things SRL didn't have to address before facing Hagler.)
I'm not maintaining that either of those men match or excede Chuvalo in the chin department. I do however feel that its possible that they fit the bill in terms of being right up there though. The only serious punchers that Chuvalo faced were Foreman and Frazier, both of whom were able to stop him. While both of those stoppages were a tad controversial on nature, we should also consider that neither Foreman nor Frazier had even hit their perspective peaks yet. Tex Cobb survived a helacious beating from Earnie Shavers to come back and win. He also was being clobbered in horrifically one sided fashion against a prime Holmes, but went to the cards. Mercer survived the artillary of Tommy Morrison, Bert Cooper, Lennox Lewis, Tim Witherspoon, and Evander Holyfield. The first time he was ever dropped was the result of an awkward body shot and it came when he was 35 years of age and after a 12 month layoff. The first time he was ever stopped was against Wladimir Klitschko when he was 40 years old and on the comeback trail... I don't think its unreasonable to think that Mercer and Cobb give Chuvalo a good challenge in the chin category.
my friend chuvalo faced a few heavy hitters like mike dejohn, cleve williams, mel turnbow, jerry quarry, bob baker etc, alng with frazier and foreman.no neither cobb or mercer are on chuvalos level,in my opinion
I think both Mercer and Cobb took shots from men who hit harder than an old Williams, Mike Dejohn, Quarry, Baker, Turnbow, etc. Frazier and Foreman are probably the only exceptions and Chuvalo neither saw the final bell against those men, nor even fought them at their very best.
of coarse thats your opinion only,i've seen ali asked who took the best shots chuvalos name always is mentioned
Ali also said that Earnie Shavers hit him harder than any fighter he ever stepped in the ring with. Cobb took Shaver's best. Chuvalo never fought him......
your reaching man, most of the oldtime fight fans all say chuvalo took the best shots these are guy like me that have been around for a while cobb and mercer were good but not elite.btw floyd patterson could punch but he couldn't make george blink his eyes with his sunday punch against frazier chuvalo suffered that injury while in training for joe its documented.knowing if frazier landed that left fush he'd be in trouble chuvalo and shavers were going to fight,1 of them suffered and injury and the fight was called off, chuvalo would have out lasted earnie i believe chuvalo would have fought any fighter
I agree, and i'd add Oliver McCall to that list. What makes McCall stand out even more is that not only does he seem to be impervious to being shaken, i've never seen him cut or even marked up either. You don't get any closer to an "iron man" than that.... physically, of course. Mentally he had a few lose screws.
Cobb did get dusted by Collier though & that's something that never happened to Chuvalo and he head a ton more fights. Plus, look at the all time great fiinishers Chuvalo fought and still stayed on his feet while losing badly and taking a licking; Ali/Foreman/Frazier. When those guys get someone ready to go, they go. Very very difficult to remain on your feet when those guys are trying to finish the show.
