But if we're talking about guys doing well in a boxing ring - and that is what this original thread's point was: a real (if ancient) boxer calling out an equally ancient martial arts movie actor - then segregating the one guy in the group with pro boxing experience (however much of it may have been staged and scripted) as being the most legit holds water, don't you think? Van Damme's record in soft-touch exhibition kickboxing matches in Europe doesn't really tell us about his chances in a boxing ring versus dyed in the wool trained BOXERS, does it? Rourke at the very least, even if every single pro bout of his was fake, was known to have spent lots of time in real boxing gyms and sparred with real boxers.

 

Van Dammes record doesn't tell us much if hes going up against a boxer ???? Of course it does, he gets wrecked like me or you, its that obvious ! Way off track now to what my point was ! He had a background in martial arts, he wasn't a "straight up actor" as you said !

 

Yes I had forgotten he did a bit of kickboxing, excuse me. A bit. In an era where there's very murky accountability regarding the quality of competition or the legitimacy of the matches themselves, and not a lot of surviving video (and none in which he looks impressive)

Well I barely have time any more, what with curating the Jean Claude Van Damme Museum and being the admin of his fan club website forums, and basically just immersing myself in JCVD trivia and expertise 24/7.

...j/k. Just life stuff. I'm finally able to enjoy watching boxing again now, in small doses, after this long away from it without the pressure of constantly analyzing/interpreting/describing AND scoring every single round. Besides, the gang spearheaded by CST have done fine in my stead. The RBR threads were always just as much about creating a nucleus for discussion of the fights as they were about my individual posts.

Well, I'm glad some people got some enjoyment out of it over the years and it wasn't all in vain because that psychotically obsessive level of devoted effort for that long definitely took its toll and exacted a cost (all but totally burnt out my diehard love of the sport, played a major contributing role in accelerating the ruination of my, to be fair, probably doomed from the start anyway marriage) and I have to catch myself every time I peek in on the new threads and see my replacements sometimes doing a less than "IB-standard" thorough job with the round descriptions, and I have to step back and remind myself, no, it's probably well and good that nobody else is quite as four-season, all-weather, round-the-clock obsessed as you were, you nut. I don't wish that curse on anyone.
