Wow, high praise indeed. Maybe Carp gotta hold of some early roids?? http://books.google.com/books?id=km...ed=0CDQQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=carpentier&f=false
roids ?? No, testosterone wasn't produced synthetically until the 1930s, and I doubt it was in sports until the 1940s. Dianabol came in the 1950s. Carpentier was naturally a great puncher.
I know. :good He might have been on something though. What he needed was some of that Aaron Pryor stuff for the later rounds, in his fights with Klaus, Papke, Loughan, Tunney etc...
Loughran seems to suspect that Carpentier was some way past his best, but tells how Carpentier himself disputed that saying he fought his best fight against Tommy. That's interesting. The good things Loughran says about Carpentier are many ...... " was fast, he could punch with both hands, he was a knockout puncher, had a terrific left hook. He had good footwork, he had speed, and he knew every angle of the ring. He knew how to feint, he knew how to duck punches, he knew how to block them, he knew how to use good footwork. He was well trained, he was well conditioned " ......... "his courage, his knowledge, and his capabilities were so extraordinary at that time" etc. etc. And when a masterful boxer like Loughran says a fighter "knew how to .." I gather he's talking far above the level of having grasped a basic skill. He was impressed.
